Should I Paint Fender Trim / Moldings???

Hi guys,

I need your opinion on weather or not to paint my fender trim?
I have a black MKIV supra and look to repaint the entire car and was wondering if I should paint the fender trim the same color as the car?

I know it's just a personal preference, but anyone know why Toyota decided not the paint the trim? Could it be because of rock chips? Any reason why i shouldn't do it?

A lot of people paint them. I think it looks much better on lighter color cars (may not notice much on black). But it adds some extra curves to the body instead of just being flat across the bottom, not to mention giving it the appearance of being lower (especially if you have the front lip painted too)

Actually, I think if ever there was a color that needed it would be black. I paint-matched mine along with the MVP lip and I never looked back. After a while the trim turns into a gray color which looks dreadful. To make a long story short; I highly recommend it!

Yes from the factory it was left unpainted just like alot of cars from the factory today, less chips and paint to worry about it saves them money, I like it painted just as stated above it adds lines and curves to the car and makes it seem lower, just find someone who preps it right and paints it properly, thats all you need is that part to flex due to driving and the paint spyders or flex peels.

Hi A.M,

Do you have some pics of your black supra we could take a look at?

I would paint them on a black car for sure. I actually refinshed my stock sides and all trims to factory-like and did not like it as A.M. stated.
With fresh paint being glossy (black) and vibrant, it looks well with paint-matched trims or maybe one step less striking as the finish. Keep in mind that the oem finished trims are like that because it encounters road debris so that helps in disguising pits and road rash. The under half of the sideskirt has a gravel-like finish so you may have to spend sometime smothing it down if you want it that way or I suggest a slight scuff smoothening before paint.

I had mine painted on my black car for a while...it looked great when it was first done but after a few miles they started to get some rock chips on them etc etc...I had a professional shop do it with very hard durable finish and i still got rock chips and they started to look like shit after a while...i barely drive the car too, but im anal so a few rock chips to me is too much...
I then decided to buy all brand new stock mouldings and keep them unpainted stock and i think it looks waaay better then it did...like someone else already said, it kinda looked cheap..sorta like someone repainted the car without taping it off...
Only thing i have still painted gloss black is the stock front lip...it looks good that way..eventually i will probably get a stock black unpainted lip and put it on...unless i get a diff lip before that

Anthony,

I had mine done right after I purchased the car in 2006. I've put about 7,500 miles on her with no chipping at all. I just had my Kansai lip spoiler refinished and installed the same paint protection film on it I had done to about half of my IS-F. You might want to consider this if you paint the factory rockers again.

Ken, you know it looks so cheap, I had to do it too:)
Damn, Stefan,

Your car looks so good, it makes my heart ache. You can cheap out my car anytime, my friend. There are a few guys on SF I wish would post more pics of their cars and you are at the top of my list. I REALLY like what you've done with the black/white theme, including those bad ass Brembos. NICE!

I think it makes the car look cheap. I always think that when I see reid @ sp car. espc when it has rock chips all the ones I've seen done look like crap after some miles are put on it.

I just think it has to match with the rest of the car's theme....Mine is black but im a serious Purist when it comes to cars so my goal was to make my car look like a brand new supra that just rolled out of the factory..ive gotten like 98% there so far..

Ken, maybe the red hides the nicks and small scuffs and road wear and tear a little better then black..im not saying mine were destroyed, they actually are in pretty good shape but i am just anal so the smallest of marks will bother me...also your car is ridiculous and its prob the only other supra i would get rid of mine for and def the best red supra IMO...
BTW i always wanted your wheels..wut are they? I feel like they would look good on my car
I think the supras with the solid colors look ok with the rockers painted..i think when you do it to a car with some pearl to the paint like green or RSP or even quicksilver it looks cheap...to me sometimes it looks like the owner got the car painted at maaco and they didnt tape anything off and just sprayed the color on everything except the windows...
