Couple of 1JZ questions...

1464 Views 8 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  HedgehogSandwich
Im planning on doing a 1JZ conversion in my 89T... Ive got a few questions so I can see what Im getting into.... I did a search and did not help me out much..

1) Ive heard that there is a difference between the 89... and 89.5 engine mounts... how do I tell which ones are in my 89?

2) Ive heard there are 2 different 1JZs (1st gen and 2nd gen I believe they were called).... How do I tell the difference between the gen 1 and gen 2? Is there a way to visually tell?

3) The 1JZ auto tranny... is it a 7M auto, 2JZ auto, or is it its own seperate tranny? The reason I ask, is my car is an auto and I was thinking of converting to a 5 speed, but it would be easier and less headache IMO to just leave it an auto, since the car will be my daily driver and traffic is a bitch blah blah blah. Eventually I plan on doing some power mods, and I plan on going with a built auto (most likely an SP) and was wondering if either their 2JZ or 7M tranny would bolt right up, or if Im going to need some custom work.

Thanks for any help guys.

1. Oldstyle engine mounts (86.5-89.5) are square, New style (89.5+) are round. You need the new style ones on your 89 (along with the appropriate crossmember)

2. See pic here:

3. Not 100% positive but I am pretty sure it's the same as the MA-70 7M one.
... and for good measure... a copy of my "Welcome to the 1J swap world" post... :D

thanks for the pic of the old vs new style :)

as for the square vs round engine mounts, is looking at the actual engine mounts the only way to tell? or are there other variations between the early and late 89s?... im not sure what i have, and the car isnt here with me so i cant go look at the mounts (7M is out of the car)... you wouldnt happen to have any photos of the old style engine mounts vs the new style engine mounts do you? if anyone has photos of the mounts they could post/link to, I would greatly appreciate it. I could send the photos to my father (MKIII is at his house) and have him look and see what I have if thats the only way. Thanks for the help!!

Ive read a few of those links, the others I will read tonite.

:hail:

Many thanks :)
The other way to check on the engine mounts issue is to measure the height of the steel perches the engine mounts sit in on the subframe.

The old ones are ~3.5 inches high.... The new ones are only about 1.5" high.

(sizes are estimates... I had them measured exactly but I can't remember the numbers at the moment. I know the old ones are 3-ish inches high and the new ones are a lot shorter though)
heres a picture of the crossmember in my car.... does it look to be the right one for the 1JZ swap? please forgive me for the messy underhood.. havent had a chance to clean it up yet

forgot to mention...

i measured the steel perches and they around 2 inches from the subframe to the top of the perch. which is closer to 1.5 inches than it is to 3.5 inches but its kinda inbetween so I dunno for sure...

The 1JZ auto is not the same as a 7M auto.

The 7M is an A340E, the 1JZ is an A342E.
Theyre both basically the same box, but the 1JZ auto has different electronics (it has different shift patterns, a 'pwr' buttton and also a 'manu' button) and has different ratios to the A340E.

The A342E is unique to the 1JZ, although its very similar to the SC400 A341E box.
It also uses (ideally) T-II instead of dexII, and is a bit of a cross breed between the mkiii and mkiv box. Its a far better box than the 7M box.
