Diesel Fuel in a Gas Engine

So my friend's dad, Jack, purchased a Sky Redline about three weeks ago. Recently, he was having trouble with it stalling & not wanting to start, so he took it back to the Saturn dealership to have them look at it. The dealership came back to him & told him that the gas tank was full of diesel fuel.

Jack called the last gas station that he had been to, and asked them if they knew anything about this. Apparently the gas company got mixed up & filled the 93 Octane tank with diesel, and hadn't realized it until a few unlucky cars had already filled up and driven away.

The gas company offered to repair any of the damages to Jack's car, but said he would have to sign a contract that they would not be liable for any damages down the road that may be directly or indirectly linked to the gas mix-up. Jack is an uphappy man.

Question: How bad was this for his car? He drove around with it for 4 or 5 days on diesel gas. How bad for the turbo? I would imagine that the diesel didn't burn very well & that could put some pretty nasty shit in the hot-side of the Sky's turbo. Is this something that a one-time fix can take care of, or are there going to be residual problems down the road? What would Jesus do?

Jack is considering getting a lawyer & trying to sue them for a new Sky.

Why not have them order a brand new RB26 from Nissan? Problem solved!

:1poke: What? He doesn't own a Skyline - it's a Saturn, Sky Redline (that turbo roadster thing).

What happened isn't as bad as putting gasoline into a diesel engine, but it's not good either. Diesel fuel requires alot of cylinder pressure to combust, hence the reason that most diesels are 12:1, 15:1, 19:1 or even 21:1 on their compression. At most, I'd tell your friend to get the following replaced/fixed:

Fully drain and clean tank
Clean fuel lines
Check and clean injectors, or replace them
Clean regulator
Clean fuel rail

This car is DI, right? If it is, then you may have more extensive damage. I'd plan for the fuel station to spend ~$4,500 or more to get this thing fixed right. Tell him to sign the paper and go on, because by the time that he fights it, he'll be waiting for up to a year with a shit-car that's no good to anyone. Fix and drive, or fix and sell.
Thats a tough call. I definately wouldn't sign papers till I talked to my lawyers. I dont think he's going to get a new car out of it.
whenever your in doubt....CALL YOUR LAWYER!!!
Call a lawer, then have them replace the motor and fuel system. If they offer to foot the bill.

Ask john about gas in a brand new fucking super duty diesel :)

I've never really thought about this... what would happen?
my brother did this to a f250 once it had a diesel bed on it and the gas door said DIESEL ONLY so thats what he did lol ended up having to flush the fuel system and replace 1 injector not that bad but if it was the gas companys falt i would have the dealer replace the gastank, pump, lines, injectors, rail, regulator, tires and any thing else i could get away with lol

Haha yeah - I'm with you.

"I think your diesel gas put some rock chips in my bumper..."
i think it made the tread fall off my tires to lol
I'm surprised it even ran on diesel at 40psi.

Anyway, a few days probably did not hurt the engine or fuel system much (although some seals on the fuel system might have to be replaced if parts are removed for cleaning because of swelling due to the diesel fuel).

I would, however, be concerned with the exhaust system, specifically the catalitic converter. Diesel makes a lot of soot at low pressures and stoichiometric air fuel ratios, which probably got caught up in the converter. It probably ruined the wash coat on the converter too.

EDIT:

Change the oil too!!!

Damn... 40 psi? I don't know either way but I'd be very surprised if that's what a stock Sky Redline is running.
LoL. My dad made this mistake once. He was almost out of gas, and poured 5 gallons of diesel into his bmw z3, thinking it was regular. Then wondered why he couldnt make it out of the driveway. Anyways, i siphoned out just about all of it and filled with tank with regular gas. Then just tried starting the car for about 10 minutes. It smoked a bit while turning over, flushing out the diesel in the lines, then started right up. After a short drive around, he said the car has never ran smoother! Its been about 8 months now and not a problem.
Diesel in a gas engine usually isn't a big issue. Flush it out, make them replace the cats and O2 sensors, and it should be fine. Gasoline in a diesel engine, on the other hand, usually = death to the engine unless it's caught almost immediately.

I meant fuel pressure. It's just a guess since most gasoline engines run at around a 40psi base fuel pressure. As reference, most current diesel engines see injection pressures of up to 28,000psi (yes, I said 28,000) :eek4dance .
so it took this guy 5 days to find out he was driving on diesel?

talk to a lawyer! I'd tell them to buy me a new car and give them the diesel Sky:agreed:
what i wonder about is how some station have one nozzel.. and 4 choices of fuel..

So say the guy in front of you get diesel, then you buy gas how do you know your not getting a little diesel? I think its the new stations that have the one nozzel deal. Around here you just push the button. 87 89 93 diesel. and it all comes out the same hose...
no way, diesel have a separate nozzle and it's different diameter, the diesel gun has a larger nozzle to prevent diesel pumping into gas cars, go take another look,
ya i've never seen that at any gas station. its always been a seperate pump/nozzle for the diesel. different color pump as well.
