Looking to stay under a grand if possible. So far the Nikon D80 is in the running. Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP was looked at but after reading about fair amount of auto-focus issues its out I think. Any other suggestions since I know lots of guys here take some great pics.

It really depends on what you are taking pictures of, how you like the feel of the camera in your hands, how everything is setup, etc. I say go to the store and play with them and see how you like it.

I'm a nikon guy and you really cant go wrong with a D90. Great camera.

Go to a camera place and feel them all! I was looking at nikon but didn't like the way it fit in my hand or the menu setup. You don't want to get stuck with something you don't like! And you're going to want to upgrade the lens eventually :x

I agree to stick with Nikon or Canon... If anything I'd go out to Pentax for the in camera IS, but Canon and Nikon have the best lens support

im a canon guy..

but honestly if you are in the market for a higher entry level DSLR....you really cannot go wrong with a pentax, get a K10D or K20D body and you are set, pentax makes phenomenal glass, not to mention being able to use a lot of their older, amazing lenses, to go along with their affordable bodies..

high entry level = get a pentax
serious amateur = get a canon/nikon(obviously i am bias to the first)
pro = Canon 1DSMKIII for action Canon 5DMKII for everything else.

the problem with sony is they are ALL about megapixels, and tend to some what ignore some of the more import aspects of image QUALITY...

its smart, because its what the average consumer will use to decide which camera they want, but if you are looking for a DSLR because you want to take photography serious, there are plenty of much better cameras for the price..

here are some image galleries from the different cameras from flickr so you can do some comparing, the best advice any of us could give you, is to do A LOT of research and find the perfect camera, for yourself...the one thing i did forget to mention in the last two posts as well, is if you buy a relatively cheap camera, you are going to get a pretty terrible kit lens with it..so if you do go the cheaper route, make sure to buy the body and lens seperately...for example..should you get an XSi...that 18-55 kit lens is absolute trash, so if you buy the body, you can then use that little extra money you have to get yourself the 50mm F/1.8 which is a great little prime lens for under 100 dollars, or if you have even more get the better quality 50mm f1.4 for around $3-400..

I love the idea of having IS for any lens attached to a camera. The problem with in-body IS is that the gyro is placed near the focal point where it will not be very effective. It is most effective when placed at the mid-point which usually ends up somewhere in the middle of the lens. At the mid-point, the lens can sway to a larger degree of off-target shooting. Sharpness greatly increases and the overall IS system is able to compensate to lower shutter speeds.

The idea of in-body IS works only if we are shooting with an f2.8 lens that actually has f1.8 of glass up front. But for that amount of money, we'd rather have the f1.8 lens and no IS ;)

you mean 1DMKIII, right? mm 10fps.
meh...it does indeed have twice the FPS, which makes more sense for action, which i didnt really think of..

so let me rephrase..

pro action photog = 1D
pro everything else = 5D mkIII
pro everything period = 1Ds
