ok guys... i dont want to go buy a $350 HKS EGT guage! here's my dilemma...

during my Summer Swap i lost the top set of wiring to the back of my OLDSKOOL HKS EGT guage! i have the probe and wires from the probe that hook up to the back of the guage. so i have the CRITICAL part whre it actualyl reads temp! but... i hooked it up and it seems the top plug needs to be ther to what i assume gives power fo the guage to work! :( and unfortunatly HKS does not make parts for the guage i have anymore! its too oldskool! MOST important (very long story short) i cannot remove the HKS tap thats in my turbo! and to redrill to put another aftermarket one there would be a PITA since its under the turbo, so the turbo would need ot be pulled!!

so my question is... can i use a diffrent EGT guage all together?! below is a pic i drew of what i have and what im missing! unless one of u knows how to save my guage from certain death including my wallet, LMK if u think there is a way to get power to my guage so i dont need a new one! Power as in illumination AND power for the actual needle to move!

in the pic i show where there seems to be a blue and white wire coming off the turbo side EGT plug! if i get a Greddy EGT guage... can i hook those blue and white wires from the HKS tap side to the Greddy one by splicing? so the connection will seem like the Greddy probe is actually ther when in fact it is the HKS probe doing the reading?!

i need this issue solved by the end of the week! all ur help would be greatly appreciated! if any of u have a Greddy EGT guage... does it have 2 wires coming off the probe reading ur heat?

OR does anyone know if the newer HKS EGT guages have the same plug in in the back as my odl one?! :(

EDIT: btw my oldskool guage reads Farenhite! NOT celcius! woudl this even matter? :(

Well assuming the GReddy EGT is based off the same style of EGT probe as the HKS your plan should work fine. Yes the GReddy uses a two wire EGT probe.

I'm 75% sure that most EGT sensors run off the same resistance theory. C or F doesn't matter, it's just how the gauge translates resistance into temperature.

ahh this is one of the "TRIAL AND ERROR" thingy we hate to go thru.

If I were you. I would go to a local electronic store or a computer parts. where they may have some plug harness and custom make your own wires to it.

call HKS dealer and talk to them.. some old school plug harness are similar to the newer old school kind of plug harness and you could modify it.

for the greddy idea. if it provides wiring connection to power source and some wirings including one for the sensor. you could modify the plug harness and hook it up to your exisiting sensor.

I think that would work. since its *F to *C. im not sure if the sensor is responsible for that.. since the gauge itself is the one that converts the voltage readings to temp readings.

When I part out my car, you can buy my HKS EGT guage. I have the exact same one as you.
how much and when? is it 60mm?

i think all of the oldschool hks gauges use the exact same power set-up...both my egt and boost do anyway and by your diagrams i would assume that they are the same as yours. anyhow i would look for someone with a broken gauge and get that wiring harness off them....or ask powerhousejimbo on sm to see if he can find you one. i would assume that they are quite plentiful in japan.

hope this helps,
adam.

I haven't seen an EGT gauge that uses anything besides a Type-K thermocouple. As such, I can't imagine that there would be any problme with using your probe and a different manufacturers gauge. On the other hand, it can't be THAT hard to find the pin-out info for the power connector, in which case you could use all of your existing hardware and just hardwire power to the guage.

well i called HKS today and the guy might have been confused! not sure! i think if he saw my picture he woudl understand! :p

but he said that if i used a Greddy guage with the HKS probe that the "resistance" could be diffrent! so he pretty much told me im FUBAR'd!

anyone know if the probes or taps are the same on Greddy and HKS guages (sizewise)?! cause if it REALLY is worst case scenario i need a new guage and have to put in a new probe as well! :(

Yeah.. so I know it will sound stupid.. but what's the point of the EGT. I mean sure it's cool to check out temperature, but what is safe / not safe.. and also what can you do about it? Are you really gona shut the car down immediately when the temp rises? Technically, wouldn't it be better if it cooled down slowly, as rapid temp. changes hurt the metal more than anything else. Yeah I'm a little ant confused in all this turbo wonder world :p

the whole point of an EGT guage is to tell you how hot the exhaust gasses are. from this info one can try and determine their approx. a/f ratio. i.e. the higher the EGT, the more lean the mixture is. there is a safe zone for egt. its a topic that is discussed readily

wow! old thread! hahah!

yes my EGT prob was sorted out! instead of ghetto rigging a harness i opted to go with a Greddy 60mm EGT peak hold for only $150! the HKS EGT guage is chillin in the back seat collecting dust! :p

it depends where u mount the probe. mines mounted where the exhuast mani collecter is, on the turbo side! Urbano set my warning light to go off at 800C but i have seen it hit as high as 900C like the other night! :(

cruising i see nothing over 750C!

Thats not too bad. I cruse on the streets around 1100-1200 and right about 1400 on the highway under constant load (no boosting). My probe is about an inch from the flange, mounted in the number 6 runner.
