Has anyone encountered an engine code 71. What was the problem. I just started having thsi problem. I checked the VSV with the multimeter and it is OK. I checked the vacuum valve according to the manual and it seems OK. I could not get to the EGR valve or temp sensor. Local Toyota dealer saw my after market exhaust and said the problem was my 02 sensor. Is that the same as the EGR temp sensor? I need some help so I don't waste a lot of money getting this fixed. Thanks.

I think it's for the EGR temp sensor. Not the same as O2.

Where is the EGR temp sensor?

Where the heck is the EGR temp sensor? It must be hidden under the intake manifold? The manual drawings were not much help.

It's the EGR temperature sensor (I don't have one on my MKIII) and it's screwed into the EGR circulator valve (not it's real name) near the top of the engine. It has a rather large plug that comes off it. There are some writeups and pictures on MKIV.com.
