My gas gauge is now acting funny. It was a little over 1/4 tank when I started the car. As it was idling, the gauge dropped to below empty and stayed there, until it finally creeped up to about 1/8th tank. Driving around has fixed this before but I'd prefer to take care of it once and for all.

Does anyone have any suuggestions as to what I should look at first?

this is just me, but when the needle goes a little past the halfway mark, thats when i usually fill up.

YOu might have water in the tank?


OR maybe a leak in the tank float?

I believe the problem was caused by the 5-wire harness that snaps into the assembly. I removed it, cleaned it (the whole fuel pump and area around it had 1/4" dust on it, noted that the arrow on the fuel pump was aligned with the arrow on the surrounding metal, and replaced it. The gauge seems to read just fine now. I will check all the wires and the harness this weekend to make sure one or more isn't loose.

Does anyone know how involved or costly it would be to replace the stock fuel hoses on and around the fuel pump? They seemed a little hard and brittle from age.
