So I was getting a high idle at about 1100 rpms and after I adjusted the valves it was getting anywhere between 1100 and 1800. After it warms up it is usally on the high side and it just keeps backfiring but just little popping, nothing big. I checked for air leaks and its not throwing any codes. Any help or ideas is appreciated, thanks.

I got kind of the same problem. Mine idles at about 1200. When I crank it it shoots to 1700, goes back down to 1200, does this like 3 times then stays around 1200..sometimes lower sometimes higher...

Do you have to pull the cps to check it? Timing set and 10 degrees. I talked to a mechanic today who said the popping was from it running to lean so I am not sure as to what would cause that.

i thought bacfireing was excess gas getting into the exhaust and burning because of the exhaust temperatures :dunno:

Popping is from it running rich, not lean, IIRC.

And I would check the TPS. Mine is dead and the idle is around 1500.
