I am very interested in finding out what kind of octane I can make on various amounts of Toluene or Xylene. I did some calculations, which should be pretty straight forward. I am very excited to try this when spring rolls around.

Here is what I calculated:

------------------------------------------------------------------

Toluene - 114 Octane
Xylene - 117 Octane

Here's the math:

(A x Gas Octane) + (B x 114 or 117) / (A + B) = Octane Value

A = Gallons/Litres of Gas
B = Gallons/Litres of Toluene/Xylene
114 = Octane Value of Toluene
117 = Octane Value of Xylene

------------------------------------------------------------------

* Note that if using Xylene, a lubricant for the gas tank is recommended. It is not neccessary to do this for Toluene.

* The Use of more than 50% of either additive is not recommended. Use more at your own risk.

* Recommended climate for Use of these products is 70*F/21*C. Any lower and you will start to have problems with cold starts.

Is it true that Toluene offers more power because it has a higher concentration of hydrocarbons than gasoline does?

another thing not noted.... octain ratings are shown with the (R+N)/2 method.... the reason u cant use more than 50% of a tank of either paint thinner is because the R and N figures are so far apart from one another. fuels like this have very high flash points... which means on a cold engine... you'll probly have trouble getting it to start... ive run mixtures as high as 75% toluene

Yessir. It is a carbon adder.

where do you pick up xylene and toluene in bulk? and for gods sake how do u pronouce toluene lol
Any paint supply or chemical store. Its a paint thinner basically.

Well you can use more than 50%. You will have trouble with sold start, but if the climate is above 70*F, you should be ok. F1 cars in the 70's used 90% Toluene and 10% filler(race gas). You wont be able to run pure Toluene properly if thats what some of you are thinking lol :D.

Just for curiousity, what is the average price for a gallon of each?
toluene around here is usually right around $6/g

prices have gone up and prepare for the DEA to show up asking questions if you buy much at a time.

if your search there is a HUGE thread about this from i think 04 or something...but i dont think it had all those calculations.

ive read in that other thread people say you should use ATF and deisel fuel in it when you mix it.

Thats for the xylene, i dont think that needs to be done with toluene.

mavel mystery oil... and yeah i'd still add a quart or so of that forevery tank of toluene....

u can run damn near as much as either as u want aslong as its hot. as for the xylene.. that stuffs like 1.5 times more expencive than toluene. i used to get mine at sherwin williams. they kinda look at u funny when u tell them u need that much of it and they ask what company u work for and u tell them your putting it in your car
