Honda engineers have descended on a workshop adjacent to the Nürburgring with an interesting mule. The car has remained in the garage bay all day, but we managed a few snapshots that reveal a compelling project in the works.

The primary donor for this mule appears to be a Honda S2000 roadster, but it is very heavily modified with riveted panels to add plenty of length and width. The passenger compartment is much larger, and the hood line is severely bulging.

It's difficult to tell the actual size of this mule, but it appears that the dimensions of this car could be consistent with the next NXS supercar, which might finally be entering some form of engineering reality. When the car finally leaves the garage and sees the light of day, we'll have a better idea of what this mule actually represents.

Stay tuned, as our cameras are trained on the facility, awaiting the prototype's unofficial debut.

Day 2 at Nurburgring

We recently posted some spy photos of the alleged new Honda NSX mule snapped yesterday at Nürburgring, and today, after an arduous day of preparation, Honda engineers have finally hit the race track again.

Seeing this prototype in the light of day reveals proportions consistent with Acura's Advanced Sports Car Concept, which debuted at the '07 North American International Auto show. The S2000-based outer shell used on this mule doesn't exactly correspond to the show car, but it may provide clues as to the direction Honda is traveling with the next NSX.

From these photos we can see the diagonally stacked exhaust tips on this mule, which looks similar to the concept. The mule's large central air-intake in the front bumper fascia also suggests that the production NSX could use a very different styling, when compared to the concept, which had no center grille and only two smaller openings where the fog lamps reside. With the luke warm reception at Detroit, the design transition from concept to production is expected to involve significant styling changes.

The expansive hood on this mule definitely looks large enough to handle a V-8 or V-10 engine as per the concept.

I'm guessing they're attempting to disguise it like an s2k to detract attention.

I see no resemblance, but whatever they whip out should be nice.

.... with the next NSX supercar, which ......]

You lost me at the word supercar! HAHAHAHA.... NSX=junk.
The sketches from the rear look horrid. The front is okay.. but alittle to futuristic for me.

Front engined car != NSX, so they better retire that glorious name now.

Unless grand touring is a big part of the equation I hope it won't be front engined and $150,000. Anything over $100,000 that's front-engined better be grand touring. Mid/rear engine is what we pay for when we pay $100,000 for ultimate performance. 2010 calender year seems about right as high speed airflow interactions with the actual bodywork have to be considered for final tuning. This looks like very prelim. investigations.

It was a supercar when it came out. It was beyond anything else for a combination of power, handling, reliability, comfort, etc.

What makes it junk? Because it doesn't have tons of power? There are many cars that are very coveted that have less horsepower.

Great post. The NSX-R; GT3 and the F430 represents the last of the purely ultimate drivers' sports cars.
