How bad is your gas mileage?

In my 86.5 NA with 149 XXX KM on it, its terrible.
It costs about $42-44 to fill up from empty with 89 octane @ $0.82/L. On a whole take i get maybe 360 or 380 km. I used to get about 400 or so. Only mods are 2.5" exhaust, no cat, no resonator, and a balffless muffler. Other mod is replaced intake resonator. I think my timing is off a bit, as i get a bit of a studder as it reves between 2000 and 3000. What other problems could it be? I fixed the BHG a few months ago as well.

I Pay ~$18 USD to fill up with 93 octane. I'll never complain again
geeze, thats almost $1/gallon. I usually end up around $26 and thats for crappy oxygenated California 91 octane...

Speaking of (rant mode), gray davis and his band of well-intentioned enviromental fuck-ups need to pull their heads out of their collective asses. Adding oxygen to gasoline in a Fuel injected car does extremely little for emissions, but decreases your gas mileage because you're actually burning less fuel (your O2 sensor sees that you're running lean and decides to richen the mixture to bring it back to the same readings from normal gas)... Throw in MTBE, and CO2 emissions, and you're bound to come to the conclusion that the majority of emissions in CA are from THC being absorbed in Sacramento

What's more expensive for the turbo?
turbo is three-wire, NA is 1-wire. If you buy the "universal" types you have to cut and splice. It generally costs 1/3 of the plug-and-play versions. Unfortunately, I dont believe you can buy a "universal" 3-wire O2 sensor with the stupid flange toyota put on. But, you can buy the NA universal flanged one-wire, and a universal 3-wire made for any old car. You unscrew the 1-wire from the flange, and screw the three wire into the flange. Cut and splice, and you've spent $60, compared to toyota's $112

Heh, I run nothing but Chevron 94 in my baby. Small price to pay (just less than a dollar a liter) to keep her from knocking her pistons to death, driving up some huge hill.

Anyway Stonedwom, you are getting horrible gas mileage, unless you're driving really hard, carrying tons of heavy stuff, or commute in a very hilly area (which you may be).

Time to use the TSRM, and start troubleshooting. Here is the fuel economy troubleshooting chart.

Almost anything can be tested, and verified if it's working properly, and only faulty components replaced. No sense replacing parts just for the heck of it.

Now if only mechanics would work like that!

Start with the basics like compression check, ignition timing, spark plugs, spark plug wires, cam belt alignment, air/vacuum leaks, oxygen sensor, etc. etc.

And don't forget about alignment, underinflated tires and dragging brakes either.

Best part is, that once you get it tuned up or repaired, you should gain some horsepower as well.

Best Luck.........Sdude.

The BOSCH oxygen (lambda) sensor plugs right into the stock wire connector. You can also get a plug-compatible from CarQuest, if they have shops in Canada.

I get 23-27 miles per US gallon (3.75 litres) and 93 octane is $1.54/gal in Northern Virginia. Why's gasoline so expensive? I thought Alberta was awash in oil.

My old 86.5 NA got 21mpg in town and 27-28mpg on the highway. When I swapped in the 88 turbo (3.909:1) differential, it jumped to 31-32mpg on the highway. If an NA is running right it gets quite good gas mileage (much better than the retarded EPA figures  ). BTW, that's not a resonator in the intake. It's a Desholds chamber. Put it back in. It hurts midrange power to remove it.

If your timing is retarded you will run rich and will get worse gas milage. I would recommend advancing your timing a few degrees past stock to lean it out a little. You will get a lot more power from advancing your timing too, but be careful cause you dont want to have your motor pinging. If you do this make sure you run ONLY premium gas.

Just because theres lots of oil/gas in alberta dosent mean the government gives a shit...its not like you can make your own gas(for your car)..
BTW i got horrible gas milage outa my supra full tank= 60 liters costs around $45 lasts 270 KM..ouch

cant wait to see what it runs with 720cc injectors and dual fuel pumps..

my O2 sensor was on the high side of the resistance speck and the driver has a heavy foot :p

I get about 500-600km per tank, driving in stop-and-go rush hour traffic every day.

About 30km one way, and half of that is inching forward, at a breakneck 10km/h.

Ah......the joys of owning a 5 speed in downtown traffic. :(

Cheers........Sdude.

You guys are all pretty lucky here in Sac, CA. Cheveron Supream 91 octane (that's all thats available) is $1.74 and 9/10ths of a cent per gallon right now. It usually cost me $32-36 everytime I need to fill up.
wtf... its costs me about 1.89 for chevron 91 octane in san jose and usually costes me $25 to fill up, oh well, i get about 14- 18mpg in my car :(
