How exactly do you line up the distributor timing? I dont see anything to line it up with...sorry for being retarded, my laptop is broken and i dont have the regular diagrams from the manual

also for the cam gears, if they are off by a notch does it make a huge difference

as far as the dist there is a notch in the gear it self on the dist and the line on the housing of the dist line those up and your good and when you get it in make sure the rotor lines up with the # 1 cylinder the cam gears should line up to or the timing will be off

Set to TDC, your matchmarks should line up on the cam gears, then match the mark on the distributor gear with the one on the head. It is very straight forward. As said previously, you'll know you're in the right ballpark when your rotor is pointing to #1 cylinder.

No, you don't need the valve covers off. You just take the plastic cam gear cover off so you can check alignment of the cam gears with the dimple in the metal plate behind the gears.
