is there some special key type tool thats used to take off the antenna? if not, how does it come out? its virtually inaccessible from the inner boot

With the antenna down, look at the silver trim ring that is around the antenna. There are 4 notches, use a coin or a screwdriver with a cloth to protect the paint. Then unscrew it. Once you remove that trim ring, the rest will be straightforward. Let me know if you have problems.

i would recommend using a socket that is made for removing the rings.Snap-on ,MAC,Matco have them,but sometimes if you have a strong grip ,you can remove it with your bare hand.
