Hi guys,

So I'm going to be getting my first street bike soon, and I've read all of the "beginner motorcycle" articles and stuff and have been riding mini bikes, then dirt bikes, and scooters around since i was a little kid.

Here is the idea/question:
I want a Yamaha FZ6 or an FZ6R, but those are newer and I'm buying used...

The FZ6 (97hp) has much less bottom end than the FZ6R, but it also has ~20hp more than a newer FZ6R (78hp). All of this extra power is high in the rev range...

So my idea is to put an adjustable rev limiter on the bike, and then set it at ~7,000 RPM which would give me 50hp before hitting the limiter.

Has this been done before? Does this sound like a good idea?

Here is a company that appears to make an adjustable rev limiter like i'm looking for: http://www.mpsracing.com/products/Dyna/ig01af.asp

Then i could skip getting a Ninja 500 by basically detuning the FZ6... right? Then when i get bored at the low revs, i can turn up the limiter...

It seems like a brilliant idea to me...right? Why don't more people do this?

I guess I'm confused... My question is why? Making that little power I highly doubt the bike will "get away from you". If you have riden a scooter and a dirt bike I don't think you will have too many issues handling the bike by just staying in the lower rpm range. Why not take a MSF course that supplies a bike, that way you can quickly see if 50hp will be sufficient for you? I think it's a waste of money personally. If you were talking about an R1 or something I'd understand, as an accidental blip can pull the front wheel up.

I think you could handle an FZ6 even if you're new to riding.
QFT.

Just be conscious of your throttle input and you'll be ok. You'll find the FZ6 doesn't rev as fast as you think, so even a quick snap of the throttle won't send you out of control. If you're really that worried about it, you could try to find a throttle tube with a longer throw length. It basically increases the amount you need to turn the throttle before you reach wide open. Then when you're comfortable, just switch back.

just buy a gsxr1000 it has 3 power settings. Just learn on the lowest one and go from there. You have one bike, dont lose your ass trying to sell another you dont want after a while and have the liter bike power once you are ready for it.

It's not as bad as you're thinking. Unlike a car, where I think all of us are eager to explore it's redline on the first day of driving it, a bike commands a lot more respect and prudence at all times. Case in point, my Triumph Daytona 675 revs to something like 13,500 RPM (I'm not even sure, that's kind of the point) and the highest I've revved it thus far is about 9000 RPM. Although I'm more conservative than some (the wisdom of age and self preservation?), I can tell you that you'll be thinking a lot more about your overall safety while riding than when driving a car, making it a lot easier to respect the machine and watch out for yourself. On a modern 1000cc bike, I'm sure the power settings are a better idea, but on a 600cc I think you'll be just fine! Happy riding! :bigthumb:

My gixxer 750 with it's 13x hp to the rear wheel is extremely easy to control, under 8k rpm... if I'm really feeling froggy, I have a mode select switch to change the fuel maps and "power output" to the ground, so if I'm ever caught in bad weather or anything I can slow the throttle response and kick back the power via fuel map changes... all 08 and above GSXR's have this, it's said that the 600 in "c" mode (the lowest you can go with the least power output) is equivalent to a 250cc motorcycle.

If you really want to think about it... the FZ6r is considered a beginners bike by most (same with suzukis sv650), the styling looks aggressive, and the power appears to be high, but it's completely manageable by almost anyone who knows the slightest bit about bikes, and I would be pretty surprised if one got away from you.

Why? He's been riding for awhile, although it's not on street being able to control a dirt bike is better experiance than none. A FZ6 should be no problem for him. Hell I've been riding off-road most of my life and I have no problem picking up a 636 this week. It all deserves respect and as long as you pay attention and learn the bike bit by bit.
