I previously owned a 2nd gen RX-7. After many engine's and countless downtimes i have decided to go towards the MK3 Supra. I was looking for a 90ish Targa Turbo. I was wondering what are some problams they have and what am i ganna have to check if im looking to buy one? Well i know the common stuff but anything like just prone to MK3 Supra's?

welcome to supraforums.com MKIII section. please do a search on BHG, bad head gaskets, and rod knocks. you just might change your mind about getting one of our cars. not trying to discourage you, but trying to inform you before you get into one. we have our share of problems too. why not just swap a SBC into your RX7? they have kits at http://www.grannysspeedshop.com/ . you should consider it. more bang for your buck. have fun and good luck.

we blow head gaskets like you blow apex seals

Before you scare the guy off make sure to let him know that a Metal Head Gasket with some ARP bolts or studs will fix it all.

also yeah search it will save you alot of trouble in the long run

i am currently aware fo the bhg. But is that the only main thing? also i dont wanna get into the whole sbc. If i wanted to keep it id drop a 1jzgte and be couragous but im not. to many electrical problems and just minor stuff.

BHG is over rated.
I've never had one, yet have helped fix many. Most were due to people continuing to drive on an overheating motor, or improper surface prep and/or reassembly from a prev repair.

The biggest concern is that ALL MkIIIs are old, & old cars characteristically have plenty of issues. I'd be more concerned with a petrified eng wiring harness [for example], than I would be about BHG, but that's just me. Why? New engine harnesses [besides many other OEM-only parts] are on the endangered species list. In othr words, BHG is the least of your concerns.

ever try to solder on that green crusty wire? or have to go jiggle the cps harness? i just replace as i go. i doubt i'll ever get into replacing the entire harness. id just go stand alone at that point.
but as was said best case you are gonna get a car that is 11 years old.

Wiring harness was on the top 5 things i bought when I got my supra a few months ago, got it from qwikstrike. Gave me one hell of a deal, it was the second thing i bought on the web for my car. the frist was the totaly useless Chiltons celica/supra manual POS!!!

I just thought of something. All this BMC* about problems, no one has mentioned cost to mod. If you want to mod, that is.

If you want the good shi+, it'll cost. Many individual items aren't unreasonably priced, but when you view the big picture, costs mount up. ~$900 Bomex kit, custom beauty ~$700 CF hood, custom beauty ~$800 TO-4E, ~$375 oem eng harness, ~$220 oem weatherstripping [need more, too!]...you get the idea; & of course it's understood that that's only a partial list. We like to brag here on SFs, get used to it.

Oh, but be careful, as it can consume you. I've seen what boost has done to many young lads & lasses. It's a drug. An addiction. You gnaw your lower lip thinking of your next mod, while you work on the d^mn thing. Fu<#ing ey, weird shi+.

Go buy a MkIII & mod it right, go ahead...my God, the mind reels. Easily upper one percentile in [on-boost] acceleration. Truly a pleasure- that also brings praise, ridicule, envy, & inquiry from the othr fruitcakes who talk about this car here. Geniuses & Numbskulls alike, quite a circus.

The mk3 supra can be a reliable sports car. Keep in mind these cars are 14 or so years old now. The BHG is a more common issue, but with a MHG and ARPs. YOu'll never have to worry about it again. Just take care of it do things right and you should be fine.
