Well looks like I'm finally doing it. After years of toying around with the idea and going from shit job to shit job I've made up my mind to take the plunge. I've taken my ASVAB and talked to a lot of recruiters. The only thing left is MEPS and then swearing in. Barring anything unforseen I'll be going to basic in the fall (finishing college semester and having a fun summer  )

I chose to go 2 years active army and then 4 years guard. I'm making sure everything is in paper and I'm watching my back but I have 2 friends who went through the same recruiter and they have no complaints so far...got their signing bonuses and everything. With the 2yrs active and 4yrs, I'll get a 60k bonus right off the bat and then regular pay after that. I could have split the bonus up 30 now 30 later but I want it all now. My MOS is 68W, medical health care specialist, or combat medic.

Hell I'm 21, womanless, childless, moneyless, sick of living at home...why not.

Good luck. Thats quite a commitment for a "why not" reason.
Lol, well the things that held me back for a while was dating a girl for 3 years and getting engaged (didn't want to raise a military family) but she's gone. Then getting layed off my latest job was kind of the last straw. Otherwise I'd have done it a few years ago...hell I'd only have like 2 or 3 years of guard left.

welcome to the military. I hope you are very dedicated and not afraid of needles. 68W has alot of responsibility and you are going to be sticking people with needles alot, especially in iraq. The army is a good job to have, you dont have to worry about getting laid off from work because your job is secure. but good luck, if you have any questions feel free to pm me. I am not a 68W but i have alot of friends that are.

So will you have degree after this semester?
I'll have all my gen ed classes completed for my major, Associates for Radiology Technician. All I'll have left is clinicals, which I can do later at the governments expense.

Thanks so far everyone.

Make sure you get that $60k bonus in writing... because 2 minutes of searching and military.com said that the highest active duty Army enlistment bonus is $40K(the maximum allowed by congress). Also says any one person can combine the enlistment bonus with other incentives/bonus, but the maximum any one person can receive is capped at $40k.

Good luck with that.

Yeah I was wondering that too but I guess their some type of exception for being "loaned" to the regular army for 2 years. It will be in writing for sure before I sign anything. I know a guy who got fucked when he joined the marines and didn't get any bonus at all after being promised a decent one. The back up plan, just in case the recruiter thinks he's going to blow smoke up my ass, will be just go in the Guard for 4 years and skip out on the active.

Probably. There's always an exception/waiver/etc. for everything in the military. Good luck man!

I'm willing to bet a large portion of your "guard" time will indeed be active. Just stay active.
More than likely, I've thought about it. I have the next 2 years to decide being that the option is always there. There's no telling but I'm figuring my chances of going to Afghan are better than Iraq since Obama's apparent troop reduction plans there. Maybe we'll go into some other godforsaken country lol. I got a friend who's Stryker unit is deploying this summer more than likely, we were discussing the chances of where he'll get sent.

hmmm...yeah that $60K bonus sounds kind of fishy to me...almost makes me want to raise this :bsflag: high in the sky but if they have it in writing so be it...

You do know you will be overseas atleast 3 of those 6 years right? Once during active time and twice during reserve time.

From your life situation you are describing you might as well go 4yrs Active. Being in the Reserves is actually quite challengin because you are expected to do the same level of training and only get paid for those weekends. You have to balance your civilian job/life with your military life. Also nowadays Reserve units are in deployment every other year basically.

Make sure you talk to as many military personnel as you can. Preferably your MOS.
