alright

so whenever I fire up my 88 turbo, the birdcage comes on

when the car is warm, it turns off.

I assumed this is kind of like a warm-up light to tell me not to thrash the car until its at operating temp, but I haven't heard anyone else mention this and can't find a thread confirming my suspicion.

Is that how it works? or do I just need more coolant in the overflow bottle?

mo' coolant! as the water heats up in the system, it expands into the res and fills it up enough not to trip the sensor. Just add more and you'll be good.

Yep, same thing happened to me.... when the engine heats up, the tank ends up getting filled up enough that it will turn off the signal.... fill her up, and let the tires fly

A couple of months ago I would have to refill the overflow bottle with coolant about every 1-2 weeks. Now the birdcage light comes on every 1-2 days. Is this a sign of a BHG taking effect? Please tell me no.

There are a myriad of things that can cause the cooling system to lose coolant over time. A new rad cap, pressure testing the cooling system when it's hot, and a bock test to check for a BHG should tell you what the problem is.
