Hey guys I've been looking at cars lately for a nice luxury like daily driver and was checking out the merc c240. I'm seeing some higher mileage ones (70k+) in the low teens which isn't to bad and it's a pretty nice looking car. How's the reliability of these things? With it coming in on 100k miles am I going to have alot of problems with one making me spend out the ass on fixing it? Give your impressions and opinions on them. Thanks

Yuck..
You can find any better car than that for the same price easily.

Sure it is a pretty car but will you buy it on looks alone?

If you are strapped for cash it is a lesson in futility for you to go buy an inexpensive German car out of warranty with relatively high miles.

To summarize a quote for a friend; German cars were originally designed by highly specialized engineers to be driven on the autobahn and serviced with highly specialized tools in a highly specialized environment. Most other cars are designed to idle comfortably in traffic and be serviced with common hand tools by almost anyone, anywhere, at any time.

When things break it will be costly, but that is only if things break. If you have any problems it will more than likely be a small electrical niggle. In my area where these cars sold ridiculously well, it is not impossible to find stripper equipped C320's and fully loaded C240's if I wanted. So your overall reliability will only be dependent on the options the car has, the car itself is dependable in spite of that. Any well cared for car at this age should not have any problems now. Ask for papers and you will see.

The later years of the C320 is the car you really want.

The optioning difference between the C240 and a C320 is significant and when new the two models had good disparity in MSRP's compared to the previous C-Class. Depending on your region there is a little caveat here; some dealers fully optioned C240's to maintain a high dealer markup.

I should also add that about 18-20% of all these cars were made in Brazil, I find from a general look at people's experiences that those are a bit more undesirable.

If you like it then just stay away from any automatic C240's and you will be fine. I would rather a used M3, C36 or C43 for that price. A4 is a distant fourth.

I threw up in my mouth a little. Just a little.
 Atleast he did not say he wanted the C230K. Where else would you throw up out of? Vomit does not come out of one's ears.
get a c32. they are awesome. im an mercedes benz tech. i wont lie these cars have a fair share of problems like any other brand. Just REMEMBER just because its a 30,000$ car for 10,000$ that parts are for a 30,000$ car. people with 190,000$ sl65's seem to forget that : ( . And the water cooled alternators are not cheap or the labor they pay me to install them. C240's do seem to hold up quite well though, but be sure to have a good mb tech look over the car first. 50% of cars a see everyday need atleast 500$ in suspension work, and 20% of them will buy it the others care about popping and thunking noises and a loose steering feel.

Don't do this either. Had a C32 AMG for five years. You don't want to go there. Had a C240 as a loaner when the AMG was getting serviced (new tranny at 4,100 miles). After driving it for a week, a minimum of 100-miles per day, I couldn't figure out why someone would buy one of these cars brand new, to say nothing of getting a used one, unless they just wanted to say they had a (cheap) Merc. Interior quality and fit and finish in the C240 says nothing but fleet rental.

Ken.
I wouldn't even take that model of C-Class as a loaner unless it was post C32 AMG model. The good news is that the new model blows it out of the water handily.
C32s had many problems.. C55 on the other hand is a great car.. If you haven't driven one, go test drive one.. U'll love it..

C240s are crap.. I'm sorry.. I get that as a loaner when I take my C55 in for service.. Brakes feels good but thats about it... Under powered, handles bad and it's just not a solid car..

I had my Audi A4 1.8T Q for 4-5 years and I really enjoyed driving it.
Give an Audi A4 a try..
I can't believe your dealers, I have never needed a loaner but on the rare instances I did have one I was never put in a C240. Are you also given an allowance or reimbursements for things like gas or missed work?
No, they will not give you an allowance or reimbursements for gas.. I take my cars in for oil change and I always take a loaner cuz i don't want to wait in the dealership..
See my problem is I want something relatively cheap im' even looking under 10k now because i have to drive so much every week going to nursing school so im' actually considering something along the lines of an 2000 accord. I just want something that will be nice and get good gas mileage. When i finish nursing school it will stay my daily driver as I plan on buying a Supra at that time. My main concern lately is gas. I've been driving a regular cab 2004 silverado and it's killing me on gas. The drive is nonstop highway driving but that truck drinks gas like R.Kelly's girls drink piss. Thank for all the info though on the merc, it was kind of a spur of the moment deal.
You could pick up 99-01 Audi A4 for under 10k or around low 10k..

Accord would be a good choice too.. Both are reliable but Audi has more fun factors.

good luck
