I always liked the '97-98 version of the headlights, but don't wan't to pay the $600 price tag. I know a few people on the forums did this already, so I had some time and tried it. It came out better than I thought and I'm happy with the results.

i may be alone here, but i think the 93-96 style look better with chrome backing, i think they look a little off without the 3rd ring when you add the 98 color. just my .02 though, but they turned out very nice.

Thanks for the comments folks. Yea I wasn't sure about the 3rd ring because it doesn't have an "outline" like the 1st two and I didn't want it coming out looking jacked up so I left it. Started about mid Saturday and ended mid Sunday. Here are the steps I took.

open headlights per MKIV.com
unscrew plastic bulb piece
use fine 150 sandpaper to sand the chrome (don't sand the ring outline around the lights because u need to tape that off)
wash chrome dust off
Tape off chrome rings (hardest part)
use plastic primer on whole headlight (let dry for 1hr)
use black paint (I used rust-oleum HD2876 ultra flat black) let dry for 2hrs
Polish inside of plastic lens you took off
take off tape around rings
screw in plastic bulb piece
put headlights partially back together
reheat the headlights to warm up the glue (I did 8 minutes at 190degrees)
snap back together firmly and snap the metal brackets back on
Use RTV automotive silicone sealant for all the edges (let dry for 5hrs)
polish outside of lens
