I have been gathering parts for more BPU mods and was looking at a FMIC, but from what I've read it won't fit with the active aero lip installed. Now I'm torn on keeping the lip and skipping the intercooler, or replacing it with a TRD style lip. The active aero is cool and seems relatively rare around here and without a big single I'm not sure how much benefit I'd get from the intercooler anyway...

Do I sell the active aero kit and go TRD + FMIC, or keep what I have and be happy?

Great looking MKIV! And no, not boring!

For what it's worth and 20+ years in the Supra game...do not go past BPU! If you can't resist the temptation for single, least keep a small street single and on stock ECU. You can easily get a 500whp car that way. When you start messing with that stuff you tend to chase problems (whether small or large problems) rather than enjoying the car. Again, just this old timer talking! You can take it for what it's worth, but the single most satisfying car I drive till this day is my 92 300ZX TT and it's all stock.

And to your last post, keep what you have and be happy! Keep the active aero!

I would skip the fmic. What’s the purpose of this car? Going on track? If daily or street driven only, I don’t see the point of fmic. I believe the increased volume will reduce response. I know people with hybrid twins pushing 500+ rwhp with side mount still.

What’s the purpose of this car?
Mostly street driven with occasional track days over the summers once I get a few other things sorted. I know my old 1.8T Golf (side mount) and STI (top mount) both noticeably benefited from a FMIC install. Butt dyno and real dyno results. I am definitely planning on sticking with the stock twins as long as I can, trying not to mod the engine beyond reverting back to stock form fairly easily.

A lot of the anecdotal evidence I've read here has shown a net positive for going front mount even on the stock twins. Not much downside besides spending money on something I don't really need and having to get rid of the active aero. I'm in no rush either way.

I agreed with that statement until I removed my factory side mount and it was falling apart.

Like half of the aluminum fins were chewed up or missing, which I would assume most are after 25+ years of catching rocks.

I’d recommend inspecting your existing smic and see if it needs to be replaced, regardless of which type you go with.

If you plan on staying with stock turbos, don’t track hard/prolonged sessions, and don’t sit in traffic on hot days, an upgraded smic would be ok/enough and you can retain your active aero front.

If there’s any possibility of a single (500-600+ Whp) in the future, I’d wait to buy a fmic or smic until you make your decision assuming your current smic is decent shape.

The active aero is pretty cool and I always prefer a stealthier option if possible, but I think you know it’s a clear trade off between cooling/performance and aesthetics. Purely a preference choice between the two.

I haven't pulled the bumper but the intercooler looks ok especially for its age. I was going to replace the hoses just because of how old they are and was looking for a hard pipe kit. Who makes a replacement side mount? I saw the Garage Whifbitz one but not much else.

Greddy used to make one. Pretty sure they don’t anymore. Aside from Garage Whifbitz, there’s a guy named Chris Wilson who makes them. His contact info is on the top if page 2.

There have been a few people in the UK go single turbo / run more then 450bhp through the side mount and at 500bhp+ depending on driving style you will find its limits.

This video probably demonstrates the issue with the SMIC vs a FMIC that the supra would suffer with, hence my comment on driving style

Thank you, I'll do some digging around.

great looking car! looks like you're also in the $hithole known as IL...are you up north or down south? I'm in the city myself.

Hope to see you around if you're local!
Yeah, I'm in the NW burbs. Ever make it out to cars and coffee in Vernon Hills?

Parts on the way
  • Interior Innovations leather seat covers, not looking forward to installing these
  • cluster faces and LED conversion
  • manual boost controller
  • carbon fiber TRD style front lip
  • front Brembo 17z kit

Still can't decide...
  • FMIC, upgraded SMIC, or just a hard pipe kit for the stock SMIC
  • Summer wheels, leaning towards SSR SP1 but also really like TE37s
  • Sideskirts, TRD, Ridox, or add the carbon splitters from Carbon Creations

I'm also not sure what to do about the huge license plate cutout in the rear bumper. Right now I have the UK plate flipped around and mounted my plate to that, but there has to be a better solution, right?

I would suggest you look for a USDM rear bumper as this wont have the cut out behind the plate.
Thanks. I don't think it bothers me enough to replace the bumper, my current solution is a bit clunky but since the car is black it's really not that noticeable. The USDM rear bumper has indicator lights right? my JDM bumper doesn't have those, I have them in the front fenders.

Your license plate hole can be made a whole lot better by mounting a strip of Carbon Fiber in there as a quick and cheap remedy.
Does someone make a piece for this purpose? I suppose I could buy a sheet and cut it to size.

What a transformation! Pictures really don't do it justice (and accentuate the minor imperfections in the install) Still have to do the driver side and also have a replacement gear for the power seat to install while it's out of the car.
