Need Help: Who makes the best all-around intake system for a BPU car?

1602 Views 19 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  s14roller
After reading the mkiv.com test comparison of the Blitz, Apexi, K&N, and HKS intakes systems I have a few questions.

Although the article makes it very clear which system wins the test, in the conclusion of the article mkiv.com seems to plant seeds of doubt in the mind of the reader in regards to the validity of the data used to determine these test results.

Quote from mkiv.com:
"So the question still stands, 'Which Induction Kit is the best?' Well, if you can trust the original source of data, then the clear winner is the Apexi Power Intake. For those of you that are more skeptical, the choice is probably more to do with the cosmetic looks of the induction kit, as the performance gains are very much the same."

I am personally more concerned with the filtration qualities of an intake system since I am more than willing to sacrifice a few RWHP and/or cosmetics for the longevity of my engine and turbo(s).

So, my question is this: Which intake system has given supraforums.com members the best real world performance gains in terms of filtration and RWHP?

Thanks in advance!

The stock system with a K&n filter for practicality and bang for the buck none of the aftermarket intakes make a damn bit of difference. The only system that does is a the aftermarkert filter of choice and an airbox system such as the max air box. I ahve a K&n mated to the elbow of an HKS system it looks nice and one thing the aftermarket induction systems do is allow you to hear the bov and the turbos a bit better.
me likes the apexi unit ;)
I'd be willing to bet that a stock intake with a K&N would be what you'd be after. I'd copy rogers intake if i were you, its basically as good as it gets for power/filteration.

IMHO, go with the Apexi Power Intake. If you have a stock MAF get the filter only and make an adapter. If you're VPC then get the JDM kit.

Does anyone have a copy of the Import Tuner featuring the supra? I think they used the Akidimo or something like that and they saw like a +20hp/+20torque gain from the intake alone. I know the supras been in the "power pages" a few times. I appreciate if anybody could scan those mags and either post or email the results from there real-world tests. I have an issue with a boost controller/ fuel computer and it made a huge difference..has anyone seen these pages????
Apex

Hi Jeremiah,

My vote is still for the Apex unit :) UPRD can customize a better flange than I did, and mine still turned out great:

Thanks supraforums.com for all the replies... :D

It was the BLITZ SUS intake they tested. And yes it gave over 20 rwhp in their test. Get the BLITZ
Um...It's possible to gain 20rwhp from intake alone??

Blitz unit makes most power, but only filters out large toys and small chlidren LOL I wouldn't use Blitz in the dusty/sandy environments (read TX, AZ, etc).

Who knows.....

I think the real question is .... can a dyno give a consistent reading on two seperate occasions. Work out what 20 rwhp is a percentage of 400 rwhp and ask yourself if that comparatively small percentage difference could not be accounted for in the general +/- accuracy rating of a dyno or a shift in temperature between runs etc....

Intakes

Greetings,

I have the Blitz system on my car and seems to work fine. was a bit of a pain to install as it was desinged for a JDM car. Needs a littel work to make it fit 100%. Finish was great. If you are looking for something that not everyone has, then I would go blitz.
I was just reading mkiv.com and was going to post this same question. Everyones replies ^ there was back in 2001. the results are from 99. Im sure newer filters with different technologies are out now. So;

What intake is on top these days?

Personally, I would give up a few hp for better filtration, but thats just me...
Akimoto replaces the stock intake "arm" with a nice polished unit.

It's a 5% WHP difference which is a big difference. A dynojet will generally be accurate to a few horsepower between runs with no changes. If I remember correctly they did dyno runs back to back i.e replaced the intake with the car on the dyno and made another pull. It is highly unlikely they had such a dramatic temp. (Intake charge at manifold)drop between the two tests if completed back to back to make up for a 20whp difference therby proving that the new intake did make significantly more power than the stock setup. It helps to have a dyno at your job to see the actual cosistency of one :)
I have the Blitz SUS.. dont think I will use it. I can look right trou the filter!
Stock airbox with KN drop in.
Nervous if you are still looking for an intake, I still have my Blitz SUS I just took off for my single install. I'm local to you too, let me know if you still need something.
A Max Air box works wonders
