Well I need some opinions on a motor that I guess I just bought. It was describe to me as being a fresh new from Toyota short block with 0 miles on it with not a scratch on it. It is a built motor bored .0020 over and only has 40 minutes of run time on it with no load. Just started to make sure it runs on a lift and then the oil drained and filter cut apart and checked.
The shop installing it for me received and told me he didn’t want to accept the motor. I was like WTF? He told me there was a corner on the bottom of the block near a bolt hole that looks as if it cracked off and was rewelded and that the weld did not penetrate and looked like it could pull off. Also the #5 cylinder wall looked scratched and blued like it ran extremely hot. The person I am buying it from told me it just isn’t broken in yet and the corner cracking is common on the newer Toyota casting.

I have pictures of this and wanted some opinions from some of the guys on here if everything looks okay or not. Is this motor just not fully broken in yet? The shop refused delivery on the block but it appears I cannot get a refund on it. I am skeptical of putting the motor in my car and having problems with it. The seller said he would give me in writing a guarantee that the motor is fine. I just don’t want the hassle of putting it in then have something go wrong because of the block and then play the finger pointing game.

Is this a motor you would put in your car?
Thanks for your opinions!

Ken, Thanks,
It has JE pistons and Aftermarket rods.It is a built motor advertised to hold 1000hp. I bought this from a forum member here and this is what was delivered to the shop I was getting it installed at. I needed to build my motor and this member needed to sell a built motor.Thought I was doing a good thing for both of us.

unfortunetly for me it seems the member cannot get me my money back. I was hoping I was being too paranoid and the motor was ok. The shop he had build it told him everything is ok. He is willing to give me a written guarantee that is noterized that the motor is okay. :dunno:

And Thank you, Alex

Not wanting to go that route, It solves nothing. I just want to get my money back to build a good motor and get my car running.

Man this sucks to hear :(

I remember reading your story about the methanol injection problem. You always seem so understanding about everything and just go with the flow.

One good thing is that it looks like you have a trust worthy shop on your hands as it seems they were doing right by you. They could have easily just installed it and sent you on your way but didn't. As far as the motor I guess I can't really give you any good news on it, I'm no engine expert by any means and even I can tell something looks fishy with that rewelded piece on it. Best of luck to you and hopefully your good overall attitude about the situation will somehow come back to you in a positive way :)

I try to go with the flow and put myself in the other persons shoes, but shortly the shoes aren't going to fit right anymore.... I know things can happen , as long as they are made right when they go wrong. I try to do the right thing. I just hope other people do the same. I am a buyer as well as a seller of products on these forums and want to be able to trust the people I purchase from. This experiance makes it hard to do that. I don't want to make a bad name for anyone.

The shop I am dealing with definitely seems to be looking out for me.

Thanks for helping with the comments. It proves I'm not nuts and the motor is "not well"

Did the owner give you pictures of the block before you bought it? Did he ever mention the crack/welding on the block and the wall damage?

No Like a dumb ass I went off his perfect seller/buyer feedback. It was described as a brand new fresh shortblock right from toyota bored 20 over with pistons and rods. It was said to have some other things done to it too.He even told me to check it when it came off the truck because it was not a scratch on it and in perfect condition. :dunno: I thought I was doing him a favor by taking a built motor off his hands since he needed money and I needed a built motor. Backfired on me numerous ways!

He was to have called me back tonight(Tuesday) and let me know what is going to happen. I told him I don't want the block and it is not an option. I haven't heard from him yet tonight. I am not trying to be a hard ass. This is drawing out too long. I should have had my car running by now!

We have come to an agreement and in 2 weeks he said he will have my money back to me. Hopefully all goes well and this happens as he says. I truely think if he hadn't owed the money to the shop he would have paid me already. That is why I am not "giving" the seller up. He is trying to make the situation right. In 2 weeks I;ll know. I will keep updateing. As long and I get my money back I see no need to ruin someones rep, as he would be correcting the situation.

It's good to know that there is a lot of support on this forum :bigthumb:

He got the block back about a week and a half ago. We agreed to a reduced amount to be given back to me so I could "move on". He was to have the money in 1-2 weeks. I left him a message yesterday and one today. Still waiting on an update from him. Hopefully he'll call me today.

On a sidenote though I have already received new wisco pistons .20 over and new eagle rods and clevite bearings to rebuild my original block. So I am out tat money plus the money for the other block :dunno: . It is kind of scary!

If I had my car back I would be there Mike, but it doesn't look good to get it doe by then. We'll see. If it gets done I need to put some miles on the new motor to tune the AEM for higher boost and that would definitely put some miles on it.

Well either way good luck with the car... We should have a little supra meet for all supra owners coming to the event, even if they don't bring their car!

I hope everything works out and you get most of your money back... I just found out the previous owner of a car I just bought rolled back the odometer... it just sucks and shows that you can't trust anyone anymore :(

Thanks, That sucks what kind of car is it?

For all those following this "mishap" I am very close to starting another thread on "spilling the beans" on the seller.

I sent him a PM on May 17th,2005 also left him a voicemail.

2 Days later I sent him an E-mail and left him another voicemail.

tried mutliple times the past couple days to call him. and now his PM box is full

I still have not heard ANYTHING from him. I even agreed to Take less money than I paid him to just get this problem to go away and get my money back.

At this time he has ALL my money and I have nothing and the most recent time he has contacted me was May 11th,2005 by PM.

This is getting pretty bad considering this persons "stature" here on this forum. I would have at least expected a phone call for an update. :dunno: . I even left him a voicemail with my tool free work number in case he could not for some reason call long distance.

Maybe he is just on a month long vacation or something. :dunno:

You're being too nice.

A month is a LONG f'in time, too long for that matter.

If he has $ problems, tell him you do too, because of him!

Dude, you have the patience of a saint, but it's been too long now.

btw, why did you agree to take less $$ back?
Shit, he should be paying YOU for the headache HE caused!

oh yeah, good luck :)

I offered to take less back because he had a buyer for $350 less than what I paid him. I told him to take it and give me $200 less and I would chalk it up to a learning experiance. I would lose money and so would he. I am at the point though I will need all of it back. At this point I have nothing :sadwavey:
