Hey whats up.
As im sure many of you are already aware of, there is a new emissions thing going on.
I dont have all the specifics on it, but from what i understand the cars OBD II must be plugged into the system and it verifies all information that way, and also finds missing sensors etc.

In the past i had my car passed no problem because i have many friends with shops. Mopst of the time i didnt even have to bring the car there. However, now i am stumped.
No one knows what to do.
Is there any trick to getting around this new system?
My inspection is up next month..and i figured if I act soon, i can get it passed again, but i didnt realize this new thing started april 1st.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
John

Search the forums. I posted about this recently. It sucks for us running standalone ECU's... and for those that have CE lights on w/ cars newer than 96.

Basically, there are some shady shops that will scan another car but it's very hard to find a shop that will do this. It's a big liability issue and if caught the state will not go lightly on you or the shop.

The best solution is to find a legal way around the problem. You can do this by putting a stock ecu back in your car..etc just for the time of inspection. Then you have a year to enjoy the car. Or you can get a waiver if you spend more than $400 I believe in repairs. Other than that, you are SOL. Sorry. I've spoken with the EPA, as well as the DMV in Albany and there are no legal exemptioons or alternatives.

im nobody on this forum but - i repair & write the waivers for pa emissions
(its a higher level than a inspector) keep in mind about cheating also the
vin # is present in the software of most '96 & up cars - only in the flash
type computers so your safe on the sup w/ a stock computer
also this is raw data out of the computer directly to the state vai
a phone line & yes they do know what their looking @
we've had this 'new' test for over 2 years now
do you have access to a stock obd2 turbo sup?
-do they offer mileage exemptions in ny? - here if your under 5,000 miles per
calander year your 'exempt' from the TEST just paperwork, a fee & you get your sticker
or sell it & build a '95 & down car - can always detune to spin the majic # out the tailpipe

My friend just failed emissions in his 98 Civic, OBD2. They first hooked the car up to check the ECU for codes, but since he failed with a check engine light, they put the sniffer test on. I think if your car is OBD2, as long as you pass the ECU aspect, you don't have to worry about the sniffer test. My Supra is due for one before June 1, it's a 94 with the stock twins and piggybacks, so hopefully I only have to put the stock downpipe with cats back on to pass.

a 95? OBDII checks are only required on cars 96 or newer. You shouldn't have to get a obdII scan to pass NYS inspection...

ok heres how pa works - '95 & down - dyno / sniff test
'96 & up obd2 data port only test (theres no "check engine light on" so
we'll dyno it) light on it fails period
*** all cars are exempt if under 5,000 miles per calander year
- are we paying attn. to this statement??
thoses w/o cats & obd2 can pass here w/ a rear o2 faker - no light no code
you pass ( no visual inspection that i'm aware of)
those running aem, motec or other on obd2 - your screwed
Hmmmm sounds like the price of vpc's maybe going back up

WTF's up w/ no sigs on the bottom??

if you mean the bulb is burned out or missing it fails - bulb check is
part of the test & the ECU sends a message MIL on (even though the
light is out)
