Hey guys, I've just recently purchased my 88 turbo supra; the car's been okay so far but I'm going through it right now and taking care of the maintenance items before I get into any serious modifications. I have a rough idea on the direction that I want to go and I have a Precision Turbo 62-1 turbo that my father used on his Grand National that I'm going to try to have modified by Precision to work with my vehicle. Before that however I was hoping to get some insight on what you guys would recommend for supporting modifications. How strong are the internal components (rotating assembly and valve train)? Any recommendations will be appreciated. Thanks guys

Oh, I forgot to mention what I have currently done. The thermostat and radiator cap have been replaced and I had the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder replaced because they failed on me while driving it into work.

Why would you modify the turbo to work with the car? Buy an exhaust manifold to fit the turbo. And do something about the hg they like to blow.
The turbo was custom to fit the 5 bolt pattern on the Grand National; all of the headers that I've seen for the Supras are 4 bolt patterns and since I'm going to change the exhaust side of the turbo to get the a/r ratio to work better for the application that I'm looking to build which was different to my father's application it's cheaper to do it that way. As far as the hg, I've been reading different things on this forum. Everyone of course says go with a metal head gasket of course but I've read torque specs ranging from 75 ft/lbs to 90 ft/lbs. Since the cost of going with ARP head studs isn't much more than purchasing the stock head bolts what's recommended for the ARP head studs?

Sorry to hear.
No worries, still love the car; your sig shows that you run a gt4276 on your 7M. Your opinion on my build would be very much appreciated. What's your opinion on supporting mods I should run? Also engine management to run with will be something I will be looking to do relatively soon to tune for these mods. Any info would be appreciated.

For your engine management I would go around to your speed shops and see what they can tune. If you want to learn as you go I would suggest a MegaSquirt V2 or 3, 3 if you want full sequential ignition and the good thing about it is that once you build it you should have a very good idea of what your doing.

good luck with the build.. and good job on not just slapping on whatever turbo you had laying around
Thanks, I want to build this car right. I think I may have just had a blessing in disguise; I had the head gasket go on the car when I was on my way to the hospital to see my daughter, timing sucked but I was able to limp the car home. Gives me an excuse to tell the Mrs. that I need to open the engine up lol.

This was going to be a car that I tune myself. My father has experience tuning turbo cars so all I need to do is not do what I did with my Talon's where I didn't take his advice and the tuning process should go smoothly. I'll take a look into the MegaSquirt. Thank you for the input.

lol Nice call on the HG blowing; didn't even take a full two weeks of owning the car. The worst part about it is I didn't even have to beat on the car for it to go, I was driving it to and from work and to and from the hospital to see my daughter while I was fixing my daily driver. Bad luck this time.
