OBD-I-->OBD-II ecu question

I purchased a '94 OBD-I TT that has an OBD-II ecu in it. My CEL is on and I was wondering how I check codes? I don't get any flashes to count w/ the jumper(forgot it was OBD-II) and my OBD-II scanner keeps getting a "linking error" while trying to connect. Search didn't turn up anything useful. Anyone have any input?

Josh....thanks for the link. I was trying to figure out why this thread didn't turn up in my search and then I realized my search criteria was obdII and this thread is obd2.
