oil change question

How many quarts of oil do you put in at every oil change? According to the manual, it should be about 5.5 quarts. Would using the Lexus V8 filter (part #xxxxx-20004) change that figure?

I usually get my oil changed at the local Toyota dealership. It saves me the time of having to do the work myself and I get a nice service record too. I always bring six quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic oil and the Lexus V8 filter with me.

I noticed that they usually put in about 6 quarts of oil, even though the manual states 5.5 quarts. Is this wrong?

Also, in my other car I use regular dino oil - at about the time I needed an oil change, the yellow oil light indicator lit for one second, and then shut off. I wasn't sure what it meant, so I stopped at a gas station and checked the oil level. I was a quart low. Does this mean I'm burning oil? The runs fine, no puff of smoke from start up or drive offs, and no oil leaks.

Thanks,
-Brian.

I always use 5.5 or so when i do my changes.
I use 5.5 quarts of oil as well. I change the oil myself so I don't worry about how much went in, as i knew from doing it myself.
5.2-5 here also. I pour all 6 in and let half a quart freely run out.
with the bigger filter a little over 5.5 is ok
I dont get it then. I guess some oil would remain inside the containers, but when they put in 5.5 quarts, it shows that the oil level is a bit low. Is something wrong?

dood.. why ya making it so hard on urself... just put in 5 qt of oil.. run the engine for a lil bit.. then let it sit for 2 minutes and then check the oil with the dipstick... better to have the oil to about midway on the cross section... compensates for the oil still within the engine while warm... but to answer your question, i use the big oil filter too.. i put in about 5.2-5.3 and its at thr 75% mark of the cross section. 1 qt low from time to time.. my car does it too.. 90k on the car now, its a 94 model. I just changed out the vavle stem seals.. i gotta check the oil again.. if i recall correctly..its consuming less oil. I use mobil 1 synthetic.. fergot which weight though.

i was on vacation :D
i guess when most places put 5.5 quarts of oil and the use of the bigger oil filter and the fact that some oil can stay inside the container's it wont read exactly 5.5 quarts.

Geez.. must have been on vacation forever! How's the car running these days?

I guess I'll tell them to put in just 5.5 quarts from now on. There was one guy who worked at the dealership who would always just put in 5.5 quarts, but he quit and the new guy puts in 5.5 quarts, checks the dipstick, and adds the rest for a total of 6 quarts. After that, my car started smoking... "only in da mornin". Guess it's not a big deal since I never drive the car, but I'm guessing bad valve stem seals or something to that effect. I wonder if too much oil was the reason for it.

Thanks,
-Brian.

Really, why don't you just do it the right way?? Put in 5 quarts, start her for a couple minutes, then shut it off and check and fill until you hit the full mark.

If the oil is exactly at low mark, then 1 quart will bring it up to full mark. Don't mess around with oil levels. Fill it up to full, but don't overfill.
