Oil on pistons after rebuild

1613 Views 58 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  okabbara892
Hello everyone, so I posted before about rebuilding my 2jz again. Anyhow so it's all done again and after the first start up I let it idle at 2k rpm for break in. It had some misfires so I went to check the plugs and found some oil on top of all my 6 pistons. I'm scratching my head because my block was built with forged pistons and new head seals by the machine shop. I really hope it's just my rings haven't seated yet?? Anyhow here's a picture of the oil. I would appreciate any input.

Jesus man, I feel bad for you. Who the hell is doing the machine work and engine building for you? Not the right people apparently.
Hey brother I know man I wanna rip my hair out. I went to S tec motorsports supposedly he's good. I'm just hoping that after the engine break in period the rings will seat?
Dude no. The cylinder isn’t supposed to fill with oil before the rings seat.
What’s your crank case vent setup on this car?
Did machine shop provide you with ring end gap?
Did they forget to install the valve stem seals?
My god that is a lot of oil on the pistons... Was it a smoke show?

I agree with Patrick94TT about culprits being crankcase venting or rings.

It looks like the car was overfilled with double the oil, or your crankcase isn't vented properly.

Can you take a picture of your PCV (driver side cam cover) and the hose on the passenger side of the cam cover (meant for oil vapors) to see if its properly routed?

Best case scenario is that the oil is being drawn up into the top of the motor from lack of venting. Worse case is the rings are all shot or out of spec.
I want to be optimistic here and blame bad valve stem seals.
Hey guys I really appreciate the replies. This build is driving me crazy. I have my pcv routed to a catch can. I just did a compression test and my highest was 170 with lowest being 145 on cylinder 1. I added some oil in cylinder 1 and it jumped to 160. I will do a leak down test tomorrow and update you guys.
With oil in all the cylinders your compression test results might be hard to interpret. Can you get a look at some open valves with a lighted borescope? I would try to look for signs of oil entering from the stem seals.

if this is the second time the shop messed up then i'd take it out and to a better shop to see what happened. then have the other shop pay for the damages.
if they've already had one opportunity to right this situation and still messed up then they obviously dont know what they're doing.
Hey guys so on the cylinder I did a leakage test and here's what I got. But mind you, all my cylinders got the scoring on them please someone help me and tell me if I should run this motor. I only ran the motor for like 10 minutes, I'm thinking is it because I was running rich? But I leaned it up with my remote tuner. Should I run this motor or strip it? Please if anyone can chime in.

You ran a brand new motor for ten minutes from a shop that’s already screwed you once and now you’re pulling it apart and seeing oil filling the cylinders and scoring on the walls and doing basic tests to determine if it’s healthy or not hoping the oil will clear up once the rings seal….

Pretty much, it's a pain to rip it again so I'm hoping it gets better. Plus my daily has a slipping transmission so I'm hoping this one will make it
Where's the build/clearances sheet?
