What is normal oil pressure for a 87 7mgte
I have read 4 psi is the lowest
I'm using my stock gauge...yes I know the stock oil gauge don't always tell the truth
My car sits at 40 psi cold idling at 1000rpm
Warmed up and cruising at 65 its right around 35 psi
Warmed up at idle at 700-800rpm its a hair under 20
Is these readings pretty normal? Idk what weight the oil is

Also what weight oil should I use?
This is my dd and I drive it at highway speeds 80 miles round trip
In Ohio during the summer its normally around 90 degrees outside

Also I was thinkin about running synthetic oil but had some concerns with sludge getting cleaned out and making some leaks appear
Motor has 154xxx miles and from what I can tell it has never been rebuilt
Has anybody switched over to synthetic at these high miles?

Thanks

5w-30, and mines about the same @ idle, hits 40 ~ 2200-2400rpms. Engine was replaced in the car ~70k (not sure if rebuilt or used), car now has 194k

today on my way to work i noticed my oil pressure gauge was acting funky
i guess ill install my autometer oil psi gauge
going to do oil change tonight and see if it helps

I get just under 20 psi at hot idle, and a tad under 40 psi(around 38psi) at 3000 rpms. German Castrol

When choosing an oil, just remember that the "W" stands for winter. Generally speaking, you want thinner oil for colder temps, & thicker oil for hotter temps. Since it's getting to be summer weather, I would recommend going with a slightly thicker oil like 10w-40 or 10w-50.

+1 and sythetic is usually better, but keep in mind it has detergents in it so if you dont have leaks now it may flush them out.

thats what i was afraid of happening
as of right now this is my dd with no oil leaks
when i get another car i am going to be switching over to full synthetic
cant afford it to be down for a few days due to a oil leak
plus there aint nothing better than a 7m that doesnt leak or burn oil lol
im trying 10w40 later tonight since today it was a little warmer than usual my oil got a little bit hotter so the pressure was a little lower
if the 10w40 is still not pleasing me then i will be upping to 10w50
and if that doesnt up the pressure ill just changing my oil with 5qts of lucas oil stabilizer lol j/p
im definetly going to install my aftermarket oil pressure gauge this weekend to get a more accurate reading

This is just straight up misinformation. First number = the viscosity rating of the oil when cold Second number = operating temperature viscosity. I don't care if its summer or winter, the oil is going to be at the same operating temperature, so changing the second number with ambient temperatures is stupid. In the cold, you would want to reduce the first number. I use 0W30 with an operating temp viscosity at the high range of 30 wt (german castrol) for all temperatures.

Any trouble with mixing synthetic and non-synthetic in the 7m-gte. Bought some non-synthetic while I had an oil leak and now that I fixed it want to use the rest up and mix it with my synthetic that is already in my engine.

after changing my oil last night over to 10w40 castrol gtx and a oem oil filter
my oil pressure is a little over 20 at hot idle
a little over 40 while cruising 70mph at operating temp
next oil change i will include 1 qt of synthetic to help clean my engine a little at a time

thought it was common knowledge that they are compatible...

most synthetics are actually just highly refined dino oils anyway.
I've heard many rumors that you shouldn't mix the two.. not that I listen to them myself but I wouldn't call it common knowledge..

anyway 10-40 is what I run with a napa gold oil filter and it seems to do me well. So far

i normally run napa gold filters
but i got 3 toyota oem filters for 3.64 a piece
so i figured its cheaper and was made for the car from the factory

i have asked a few older mechanics that i work with that are die hard synthetic oil freaks lol
they said the best way is to slowly switch over to synthetic
at 1 oil change put in 3 qts of regular oil and 1 qt synthetic
next oil change put in 2 qts of regular oil and 2 qts synthetic

he explained to me how it helps the carbon deposits slowly get cleaned off the seals
he use to work for marathon oil distribution here in ohio
so ill be giving it a shot at my next oil change
