Only way to get out of park is to press the red button

As the title states.. The car is a 93 auto tt JdM. And I can't take the car out of park without pressing that red button(used for when you have to shift out of park without the key)... Any ideas ?

Thanks

Either that safety switch is bad, or there is a bad connection or short somewhere. I would start with checking the wiring.

First thing to check would be if the brake lights come on when you press the pedal. It could be a bad brake light switch, that would get the most wear out of those switches. There is also a switch on the shifter, but got to take some stuff off to get to it.

No click when brakes applied.. Brake lights do come on.

Thanks!

I think if your ignition switch is not aligned properly, it will require the release. I don't have a "red button", just the little tab to remove and depress the lever through the hole (USDM auto TT).

If you press it... It allows you to pull tranny out of park whithout key(but in my case I have to press it all the time even with key)

Check the brake switch and connector under the dash by the brake pedal. If it's unplugged or faulty that would prevent you from shifting out of park even when the brakes are applied. With your description of the shift lock's function this sounds like it could be the cause.

almot every time i saw this problem on a customer car it was always because they spilled soda or coffee in that area and it was causing the switch to stick and not let you shift. check for that.... but you dont allow drinks in your car anyway...right?
