well i have been having this boost problem for awhile now. i dont know what it could be. it could be so many things so please help out if yall can
Sorry this will be long =( but please bare with me
im at bpu
fmic,intake,exhuast,ebc,bcc,bov,dp. i have a greddy profec b 2 boost controller.
my settings are
gain 19 percent at .79 bar
another thing is that no matter how i play with the setting it doesn't seem to change my boost factor but it changes my blow off valve noise level. i can put 0 gain and 10 kpa and it will still spike.
my problem let say im crusing on the freeway. like at 70ish or so. if i wot it. at like 5000rpm my boost will go from 1 bar to 1.5 bar and backfire like crazy. i see black smoke shooting out of my exhuast. the thing is when i dont wot it. lets say step down half way my boost will go up to 1 bar but if i step on the pedel alittle harder the boost will go past 1 bar. i have an auto so basicly my car will shift like at 5400 so im not making any power. sometimes when im driving local at 20 and i try wot it. i lose boost like from .7 bar it will go down to .3 bar then when it shifts then my turbo build boost up to 1 bar then spike and backfire like crazy.
another thing is that sometimes on the freeway when i wot it. it wont backfire but it wont boost. my gauge will show me losing boost but i will be able to redline.
does anyone think it could be a inproper boost controller installtion?
my air fuel gauge shows that im running very rich. can bad plugs also cause this problem? does anyone know what are the recommoned gap for BPU supra? im not sure but is it .32?
Once again im so sorry that this is very long and thank for your time.
please help =)
i been having this problem for a nearly 6 month now and i cant figure out what could be the problem. i dont hear no death wine from the turbo. im just running very rich
anything else i can do to lean it out?
new 02 senor?
i had a shop out in a apexi safc 2 yesterday but i have no idea how to tune it. so anyway anyone think they can help me hold boost? and run little leaner?
once again sorry =(

First of all take a deep breath. You seem to have answered many of your own questions with regards to the spark plug gap and the fact that you are clearly running too rich. You mentioned that your tranny shifts at 5400rpms. Are you sure you didn't mean 6400+ because 5400 is too early. I would approach your problem by setting boost back towards stock levels and then report back how your vehicle reacts as such (i.e. does it still backfire, can it hold boost, etc).

It might be your boost controler. I have heard that alot of people with the profec b have boosting issues. Maybe find someone with the same controler and ask them what their settings are. Not just boost, but things like the gain, ratio, offset. Maybe some of your settings are off. I have the older profec a and sometimes Ill boost spike like that, but not often. Maybe try a different boost controler. At bpu, alot of people (including myself) gap their plugs down to 28-30. That might help your missing/ backfiring problems.

today i checked my plug. i got some new plug from the toyota dealer ship they gave me some desno 5 star like 11.00 each or so. and i notice they were gapped at .40. so that might be it but imma try these spark plugs first. another thing is that when i changed my spark plugs today i notice on the 4,5,6 plugs were full of oil!. so im guessing this is why im running rich. my spark plugs were soaking with oil. it was dripping from the spark plugs. so im giong to have the valve seel or something like that. anyone think this is the reason why im running rich? because the 4,5,6 isnt firing right. or my spark plugged coming pregap at .40? one quick thing can someone give me a part number for liek spark plug plugged at .32?
thanks!

i don't think the boost controller is your problem. It could be a leak in your intercooler pipe or vacuum lines. I have the same problem. I have the apexi AVC-R, I wasn't able to maintain 1.2 bar or boost to redline but at 1 bar, I am able to with not problem. I just installed another boost controller, the HKS EZ2 and it was doing the same thing. Now I can eliminate the boost controller and go with a leak in the lines somewhere. If you find out your problem. let em know and i'll do the same, :)

If you have oil on your plugs that is not from just running too rich...that is an internal engine problem. If you have oil all over your plugs then they more than likely will not fire correctly.
Also, if you are BPU, etc then you need to gap those down to around .032" or so...that way you won't be reporting another problem on here saying that you would give someone $15-$25 to fix for you. Look at it like I just saved you a couple dollars.:) You will have missfires if you have the plugs gapped that high with the mods you have.

Hope that helps.

Take Care
