Pondering on future upgrades to a T-66

1107 Views 17 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Ryan23
I'll be picking up my first supra Jan 3rd from a member on here. It is equipped with a T66 turbo (.81 A/R) P-trim. I know there are tons of options as far the turbo go but I wanted to get some opinions on what would be a good turbo upgrade? Thanks

It depends what you want to do with the car. AutoX? Drag race? Road race? Fast spool? XXXWHP?. Once you have that all figured out it will be easier to give you feedback.

Hmm, true. Drag race & Road race with decently fast spool. Car is 6speed.
I was happy with the ball bearing T66 and .70 AR. You should be able to have full boost by 3800 rpms and make high 600whp ro low 700whp with 264 cams. If you go any bigger AutoX will suck IMHO.

Also, make sure you fix all boost leaks and any underlying issues BEFORE you start adding stuff. You could have performance on the table by not fixing these things and continue to have them once you upgrade. This is a common thing for cars sold that are already modified.

T66 is fine for that combo...leave it as is :)
Nod, if autox becomes more of what you want, you might want to step down the turbo actually. If you really want to upgrade, try the smaller AR and get the ball bearing center section which comes water cooled too.

Congrat's Chad!

Keep us posted.
Thanks for the replies.. I'm pumped about getting the car. I just wanted to see what turbo upgrades were available. The car makes 650rwhp at 26psi and has 264 cams. I'm sure the car will be fast enough but I know how I am and always looking for something new and faster.

That's almost 3 times as much HP as you're used to and anything above 550rwhp isn't very usable on the street. I think you'll be plenty happy. :D
Do you have a dyno chart of it? Something to "upgrade" might be the tuning of the setup.

Also, what other parts are on the car? The turbo is just one piece of the whole pie.

fORGET THE t66. geT SPGT800W. Spools faster and makes more rwhp :)
Hmm....If I was to keep the car and upgrade the turbo.....I would go with a Q trimmed T71 from Kean @ Boostlogic. Shrouded compressor housing while I'm at it (they sound sick, IMO!). Not exactly what I would consider an AutoX setup, but that's my preference. Spoolup should be in the neighborhood of 4200~4400 with the proper tune.
Aside from that, tuning wise there is more to gain on a dyno, but not safely on the street. The car is tuned pretty conservative for street duties. With only two pulls on the dyno to get "the number", I left a lot on the table. Ex:

A/F's were a rich 11.0 (on C16 no less)
Timing was 18 in the midrange ramping up to 21 up top
Boost was targeted @ 1.7 BAR
I pulled out @ 6500 due to dyno guy waving like a dumbass (not related to me)

Being that it was more or less "exhibition" day at the car show, only two pulls were allowed. On the street, it's a different story. A/F's were running 11.8 on C16, boost leveled @ 1.8 Bar, highest logged knock activity was 1.5V (grass, normal engine noise) and it pulls hard enough to make you pucker :D. Pump gas map is obviously more conservative, 1.2 bar, less timing and A/F's are in the 11.5 range. I'm sure you'll be pleased :D. Looking forward to you coming up!

P.S. I just picked up the shortblock for the new "project" today. Brand new crate GTE short block....going in the 04' IS300 we just bought. It's sad, the new car hasn't even cracked 600 miles on the odometer and we already have a turbo block waiting in the wings

I'm hoping there is sarcasm here. It's hard to tell given your post count.
Thanks for the info ryan. Can't wait to come up.. So you've got a t IS300 you're gonna turbo? Sounds like fun! Talk to you soon.

when does a fully tuned T-66 run its course? like what boost levels it is good up to, what kind of numbers does it make in its street form (not race fuel and full boost)

Chad - sounds like a beast of a car, good luck with it!!

Ryan23 - IS turbos are sweet, there are several over at ClubLexus.com and i am sure there is a wealth of knowledge there for you if your not already a member....on a side note, did you opt for the manual?

No I'm serious, ask Lar from sp. I currently have that turbo and like I said, spools faster and makes more HP.

P.s. What does my post count have to do with anyhting?

When I originally read it, I skipped over the second "0" and was thinking you were talking about an "SP80"...as in 80mm turbo. When does the latest "magic turbo" spool up by? I know I have 1 bar of boost @ 3800~3900 RPM. Do you have any dyno charts of what your car puts down? If no one else has put down any solid numbers, it's hard to say X turbo will beat Y turbo. I know Silvino broke 700 @ the wheels with his T66. If I really gave a shit about dyno numbers, then there is room in my setup to do break 700 as well. The post count remark was directed @ you being new and not familiar with your post style. Some people are notoriously more sarcastic then others.

Anything over 2 bar @ 7K and it's out of it's efficiency range. Spool up was noted above, it's not ball bearing or anything fancy... old school.
