My pt61 turbo from DaveH had its seals blown so I sent it into Precision for a rebuild and they put it under warranty and sent it back to me.

The car was only put on the dyno to tune again yesterday and now I find out that the seals are shot AGAIN!

Has anyone else had problems like this with turbos from them? Am I missing something?

Are you sure the turbo is getting enough oil? I'm assuming it's journal bearing.

I think it's a 3N. It is the one DaveH sells to compliment his turbo kit so I know it can't be the oil line size.

I had the turbo on before and it was fine until it started smoking and the guy who rebuilt it at precision said it was oil contamination.
I put new oil in and now they are blown in 1 day.

not running any sort of restrictor on the lines to the turbo?

maybe when the turbo blew it took something out, unless when something MADE the turbo blow and you didn't fix it. maybe something in the feed line? drain line plugged? (idk if that can happen)

Have you changed the oil since the turbo failed the first time?

Its getting enough oil so its not being starved. And no restrictor Kracin. Yes I had new oil put in before reinstalling the turbo.

Think the problem could have been too much oil? Or maybe they didn't rebuild the turbo very well.

It smoked on decel after boost at first but then started smoke to all the time before it was sent to Precision. Not sure about the smoking part the 2nd time because the engine has been pulled out at the shop and I was informed that the pistons are done for and the turbo seals were shot again.

The engine needing a rebuild is from the emanage tune that was acting up and it really caused a lot of shit.

this has been a common problem as of late, i have heard alot of the newer Precisions having problems like u are describing. maybe Kirk from BoostLab will chime in as he has had alot of Precisions coming to him with lots of problems. also Jose from Forced Inductions has confirmed that he has mucho ammounts of Precisions going to his shop too

i think the "precision problem" is alot of the newer stuff, not so much the older stuff.

and your motors "JUNK" and you still put the newely rebuilt turbo on it? i think that might be a problem in itself.

Yea I have heard a bunch of people having trouble with Precision as well. Same thing has happened to other people where the rings blew right when they got the turbo back.

If it is in fact just the way the turbo was rebuilt I hope they warranty it again and do it right this time.

OP, i am no expert but it seems to me there are too many variables here (possible oil supply issue, probable contamination, possible bad seals, etc...), to conclude definitively that it's a warrantable problem with the turbo or the rebuild. if your tune was bad as you assert, and the tops of the pistons are damaged (a symptom of uncontrolled combustion like pre-ignition or detonation), then it's likely Precision was correct and your oil was indeed contaminated. if i were in your position, i'd probably have the turbo rebuilt again (at my expense if necessary), and then ensure you put it back on a healthy engine with a good tune. at least then if it continues to give you trouble, you have eliminated as many variables as possible.

good luck!

I had a turbo rebuilt by precision over the summer last year. Cost a lot of $$$$. The turbo lasted all of 2 pulls. I decided to have Boost Lab rebuild it and give me feedback as to why it failed. Precision used the wrong oil seal. Moving forward I will no longer be using precision on rebuilds.
