I'm picking up two JL 12W7 subwoofers rated at 750 watts rms apiece, and using a new alpine head unit as well as new component speakers and an amp to power the components.

I'm goign to push 1,500 watts through the subs alone, then at least 200 watts more for the component speakers.

Do I HAVE to upgrade the alternator? I was quoted 675 dollars for an upgraded 170 amp alternator from H.O. alternators.

I was at the least going to get an optima red top battery and thicker gauge wiring for the grounds.

Is there anything else anyone would reccomend?

1,500 watts / 14Volts = 107 Amp Draw. That is just the subs, add 45% of the stock altenator value for stock components and lights.

the amps actual draw is another story depending on class. I would reccomend an altenator upgrade indeed/

You are definitely going to need a new HO alternator, especially if you are still running the original factory alternator.

Also, upgrade the BIG 3 with larger gauge wire...
1) Battery negative to chassis
2) Alternator to battery positive
3) Chassis to engine

Don't go buying cheap crappy wire either. I use Knukonceptz (www.knukonceptz.com) for all my wiring and they are top notch. Some of the cheaper wire available is actually a smaller gauge than what they claim, they just put an extra thick cover on the wire.

$675 for a HO alternator is pretty steep, especially for one with only 170amp output.

Try one of these guys, all three have pretty good reputations.

Have you thought about both 1000 watt amps on 1 12W7. Port it and call it a day :)

Save some $$$ on another sub, go deaf just as quick
