Can anyone give me some help on what can be causing 1st gear to slip out when releasing the clutch? All other gears work fine.

check to see if the plastic cup/ bushing on the bottom of the shifter is worn.( if it is sometimes it won't allow proper engagement of the gears) if its good then you might have the sinchronizer and hub going bad.

you can ask a tranny shop on what it would cost to do it or get another one, hope this helps.
Shifter

Thanks for the assistance. I will take a look at the shifter first and hope this will cure the problem. I did change the clutch (RPS Max Series) and have been running this clutch for a few months but maybe did not install the shifter quite right. I hope anyway. Thanks again!

That is all

Where do you get the replacement one from?
toyota. i think there are also some people selling custom ones. but finding one is the easy part. getting to it is the hard part. its inside the tranny on the gear set. you basically will have to do a full teardown and rebuild just to fix this.

either do a rebuild or find another used tranny in working condition.

My family member owns a tranny shop... lucky me but I need to get the new washer that is reinforced.
my tranny does this it wont alow 1st gear..ill put it in but as soon as i let the clutch out it throws it back at me going djkhdgialsfbgklsdf ..but also make whining noise in third ?is my trans screwed?
If you had this problem and changed the thrust washer on your trans, did you use the stock washer again when it was rebuilt?
i dunno...i just bought the car...would that be it or?
Hey I am currently picking up an 87 3.0 turbo with the same 1st gear kicking problem. Im wondering if this is a common problem and how much will it run for a tranny rebuild versus buying a used one, as i will be dealing with this problem very soon.
Used tranny will run between $300-400 for good condition.
Rebuild at a good shop will be about $900+.

Is 750$ reasonable for a used tranny with between 25-35k (or so it says...) and if not where would be the best place to sort a used tranny?
Also, Im wondering wether a used tranny will just wear out again, as the car has a stage 3 clutch from previous owner that may have caused the tranny to die.
Just wondering peoples opinions between rebuild or tranny swap.
A trans doesn't wear out. It's an issue of abuse by the previous owner.

bearings do... so that statment is false.

True here.

I blew out the thrust washer in TWO R154 transmissions and it was ONLY after having gone to the local dragstrip to race. I had an abusive ACT solid-hub 6-puck clutch disc too. I had been dropping the clutch from 3500-4000 RPMs on most of the 6 passes each night. Typically it was the next day or a couple days later that the trans started kicking the shifter out of 1st gear. My first trans that blew out started whining in 3rd gear, which I eventually lost and pretty much every other gear as well.

Fixed that by getting a low-mileage transmission and installing a really sweet Clutchmasters stage 3 sprung-hub clutch kit!! :)
I've NEVER heard of a trans rebuild due to a bearing wearing out.

It's either a shift fork, syncronizer, or thrust washer.
mine has always made the whining noise in 3rd... something to worry about?
yeah, it means you probably have too much backlash in your gearset. excessive wear on the faces of the teeth themselves is most likely the culprit. this tends to happen when you wrong an inadequate lubricant or not enough of it.
