Has anyone removed the oil pump or sump with the engine still in? if so some info/pics wold be very welcome, i am told it can be done by releasing engine bolts exhaust etc and dropping the sub frame? can anyone help?

IIRC your method will work. The reason for lowering the subframe is to drop the oil pan which partially covers the oil pump.
