I am the proud new owner of a dead stock 1998 Supra TT sportroof with only 2600 miles. The car has been sitting unstarted for the last 19 months. Obviously, it needs a new battery, but I am unsure of what else I need to do to "bring it back to life." For example, I need to drive the car about 1300 miles to get it home, and was wondering if, before I head out, if I should change the belts and hoses. I know the oil and filter have to go, but do you think that it will suffer from dry seals, and therefore leak? Are there any unique Supra issues I should be aware of for this car? I know that not running the A/C is a problem, and I guess we shall see if it blows cold (given that we are going back to Florida).

I would really appreciate any advice on maintenance and the initial starting process to minimize any damage.

Thanks

You bastard!!!! :D

All fluids should be changed ASAP. As far as the intial starting process, if you wanted to be overly cautious, you could take out each sparkplug and spray in a little WD-40 before starting it. But I think that you'll be ok, it isn't as if it has been sitting for 6 years. (like my 1st car a '71 Dodge Colt).

As far as dry seals etc., again the car has only been sitting for a while so you should be ok. As belts and hoses, inspect them, along with the tires for any signs of wear/cracking/brittleness. Anything that looks suspect should be replaced, but you should be ok.

Again, Congratulations you lucky Bastard!!!!!
:D

By the way, if you want to avoid having to upgrade everything, I'll sacrifice and trade you my car. ;)

There could be a problem with the gas. Don't you usually need to use a stabilizer when you are going to let a tank of gas sit for a long time? Also the tires could be flat spotted.

Is there is a way to pre-lube the engine? A thing that builds up the oil pressure? That would be nice considering there probably isn't a good layer of oil on anything.

Battery might be dead or going bad. I don't know too much about car batteries.

I think pulling the EFI and spark and then turning over will help prime the oil. Just like a compression test. I have heard that a car sitting that long will have turbo seal issues...

Congrats, dude. We fully expect you to have it BPU soon. :)

Yeah, good advice. Pull the fuses marked EFI1 & EFI2 and crank the car a few times this will keep the injectors from pumping fuel into the cylinders.

As far a fuel stabilizer, it couldn't hurt. Hopefully the car was stored with a full tank. The less air in the tank the less chance for condensation which causes gas to go bad, and in the olden days rust the tank.

If you can get it done before you head home, get a "Major Service" this means changing all the fluids, air filter (you may want to skip this if you plan on an aftermarket intake soon), and I would change the fuel filter, and if they don't mind, you might as well have them drain the gas tank. (changing the fuel filter pretty much necessitates gas going everywhere anyway)

As far as turbo seals, (knock on wood) but when I bought my car, it had been driving almost not as all for 2 years and my turbo seals are still fine (don't use any oil) 2.5 years and 40k miles  later. (knock on wood again). :D

If you don't drain the tank you may also want to add a fuel injector cleaner/octane booster in the first couple of tanks.

Bastard! :p
