RPS C/C with ~1500 miles on it. 1 trip to the drag strip with 3 passes. The clutch was flawless, then one day I got a bad vibration. See pics...

What would cause the clutch to touch down and grind the inside of the bell housing?

These pins aren't supposed to come apart like this pic are they?

since the clutch lasted over a thousand miles with no issue I can rule out install error. Is this a product defect? I'm not anywhere near the 900 ft lbs to the rear tire.

UPDATE on page 5...

This happened to a SF member "sadil" aslo!
Same exact problem.
Pins start to tear away from the pressure plate and start to move diagonally.
Pressure plate doesn't release evenly and eventually the leaf springs near the pins TEAR apart and trash the bellhousing and of course become unbalanced.

Sorry to hear about that James.

this happened to a dfw owner at this years road course, except his went right through the bell housing.

Sorry to hear that James. Yeah that happened to me on dyno. My clutch has about 10 passes and 2k miles. When I send the clutch to RPS, Rob called me and told me that the reason these clutch fails is because of not doing the burn out properly. While doing the burn out you should not suppose to let the gas go (this is not how I do burnout but still my clutch failed). Increasing and decreasing the rpm during burn out put a negative pressure on these pins and they are not designed for it.
With shipping and brand new pressure plate cover you are looking at $230.

Looks like a definite PP failure. Let me know the feed back you get from RPS. I've always heard good things from them. My C/C does not fully disengauge during high rpm loaded shifts. I'm wondering if mine is starting to do the same as yours since I believe the plate is not releasing straight.

It's sunday, so no.

This thread is definately not meant to be a hate thread on RPS. I've had many of their clutches and love them all. The purpose was to get some feedback from some more experienced wrenchers out there since I'm just a weekend warrior type.

I sent them a email with pics and will be calling tomarrow.

This happend to , two of my RPS Stage 3 clutches. The pins/straps in the pressure plate broke.

We found out later that is was the Lightened Fidanza flywheel that destroyed them.

Since then i put the stock flywheel back in and have no problems

here are pics of one of the Pressure plates. This one went like this after only 1000 miles. And in the other one , the straps in one place broke totally off. Damn Fidanza Flywheel

Update

Clutch is shipped.

Got my blanket it. Here is the test fit pics. Overall I'm happy with it. I'll make it fit better once I reattach the motor, but you get the idea...

Image

For the passenger side, I'm going to go around the bell housing on the engine block side and anchor the strap. See arrow...
Image

For the driver side I'm going to hit up the EGR delete bolt... see arrow...

This pic shows the 2 planned mounting points. Again, see arrows...

The blanket looks like it will work fine. It also looks like you will be able to get it on and off with the tranny/motor in the car. I see no reason with the tranny cross member undone and IC pipes off that the tranny wouldn't sag enough to slip it on. Cost was like $89 from Jegs. The blanket is NHRA/SFI approved stuff. I have no idea if the way I am using will pass tech though since I rarely ever drag race.

Hope this helps.

holy fuk that some carnage!!!

One of my forensic engineer partners had a case of a Corvette on the drag strip, who had a clutch go out on him (sort of like that red mustang) and sever a fuel line..

He got out ok, but the car was toast (pun intended).

that blanket looks like a good investment...

I wish our bellhousings were separate like a lot of old domestic bellhousings, that way you could get a steel scattershield. Even if the blanket contains an explosion, it can still rip the back of the block and front of the transmission up. Its definitely a valid concern for Supra guys, with the RPM we turn. Even autos should have a blanket/shield.

yep. going to Watson. Ships on Monday. The car goes in for paint on the 12th for about a week for the engine bay. The head will be gone for about 2wks getting ported. Hoping to have all parts back ready to put in by Dec. Plenty of time for Tx.

In retro spec, I wish I would have known about the titan scatter shield. I would have gone that route. I confident in the blanket keeping me safe but nhra legal would have been nice.

I may check on upgrade price.

My clutch arrived at RPS today (tues). I'm going to give them a day. If no word, give them a call tomorrow to see what they have found and are willing to bring to the table.

I had an RPS c/c do what appears to be the same thing a couple of years back.. I dont think I have the pics anymore I'll have to look on the laptop I gave my gf and see if they happen to be on there still... I had it repaired and sold it to a friend and bought a tilton triple... that clutch broke in my friend's car again after a few months, he sent it to be repaired and if i remember correctly it had something happen to it again when he decided to forget about it. I wasnt really happy with the tilton experience either though and my friend who bought the rps c/c from me also bought the tilton when i decided to change because clutch didnt last.. but with my power level Im going to have to either buy another tilton (id likely go with the quad this time) or an rps triple... thats why my car isnt done yet... i dont want to spend a lot of money on a clutch that is going to wear out too fast or break for a stupid reason... sucks...

Have you thought about buying the Carbonetics triple clutch? My friend had one in his supra(700rwhp) for over a year without any problems. I have just installed one in my supra 700+rwhp and love it so far.

well she wasnt mean to me, but i love being told things are my fault. said something about disengaging the clutch to hard. basically telling me i must have been to hard on the clutch. what the hell did i buy this clutch for then? then told me she would have to see if it could even be fixed, that really pissed me off. if im out 2500 on a clutch im going to freak. every reason i bought this clutch seems to be un true.
