OK, the 1JZ is running great, boosts great, but after 5.5k or so, it starts to break up and a lot of black smoke is spewing out the tail pipe. Very rich. Any thoughts as to what would cause this. It is idleing perfectly and running strong all the way up until that point.

Thoughts?

The 1JZ does run really rich up top from 5500 and on. My car would break up badly under boost in those levels. I resolved it with the emanage by taking fuel away... I also closed the gap up on my spark plugs to .028". This might help your issue as well. I know most of the 2JZ owners recommended this for their motor, seems to work nicely on the 1JZ as well.

I would recommend a fuel tuning device at a bare minimum. The car runs so rich from the factory. Most people have great success with a SAFC and it's certainly an inexpensive device. It's also handy as it will assist you in avoiding fuel cut as you get into higher boost pressures. I think this should be your first step without question. Outside of that, the upgrade paths are fairly straight forward. I think you'll see the best performance gains out of your motor with something like a AFC and a boost controller.

LMK how that break-up comes along. I think you'll see success with closing down your gap a lot. What plugs are you running btw? I've always had great success with NGK 3330's.

I second Hams answers.

SAFC try to get the typeII(more tuning options)
NKG 3330(0,28 gap) I am running 0,30 in both of my cars and it has worked good so far.

Good luck.
