‘94 TT 6-speed. 89k miles

Drained the oil out of the differential and the first few ounces were dark then it was clean. The magnet on the fill plug was covered in grey sludge, and i could feel a little inside the differential by sticking my little finger get in there. I ran about 1/4 quart of fresh oil through it (came out clean). Then filled with Redline.

The “sludge” anything to be concerned about?

Normal, as long as there’s no huge chunks of ring gear you’re fine.

A little bit. It ran for a few minutes to move the car. And it was ~100 degrees outside!

If it only ran on the spot, rather than being driven, ts possible that you didnt warm it up to full operating temp, and the oil didnt mx up to a consistent state before it was drained. Just a thought

So now I'm wondering if I have the standard or LSD differential. I'm reading conflicting info various places. Does anyone know how I can check?

I used Redline Heavy Shockproof. I don't think it has any friction additives. Just want to make sure I used the right gear oil.

Any factory diff for the MKIV doesn't need an additive.

Go out and do a burnout, and see if it leaves one or two marks.

However, the TRD and other aftermarket diffs do required a limited slip additive if they are a clutch type.
