speaker sizers/recomendations

I'm thinking of putting a system into my newly purchaved 96 supra NA. Im basically looking to find out what are the sizes of the stock speakers and what is the largest speakers that I can put in (diameter and depth) to replace the crappy stock ones. Also, I've noticed some tweeters way up in the dash, i'm assuming I can hook up a compnent set up there.

That takes care of the mind and high's, I also would like to put in a sub or 2, I was wondering if anyone have any effective sub box designs that fit the supra and at the same time make it look pretty. Anybody have any pictures of fairly afforable (but not cheap) system pics?

Sorry for the long message with a thousand questions, just trying to see what I can do :)

Thanks
Alex

front stock speaker size are 4in and the rears are 5.25in.

when you install front speakers, you will need to make a bracket of some sort if you go larger than 4in. thomas kenyon sells custom brackets.

the stock tweeter location is a huge project to get to. i believe you will need to remove the entire dash to get to them. not recommended if you're a beginner. if you go this route, the repair manual is helpful.

i was in your shoes earlier this year. i was on a budget so i just went with stock speaker sizes. i have 4in boston pros components in the front, boston pros 2way 6.5in in the rears, and 2 jl audio 8w6 subwoofers in the trunk. an mtx amp powers the subs while stock amp is powering the highs (still gotta power my highs and mids! ). but it sounds great so far. here's a picture of my components...

Hmm, you made a hole for the tweeters right in the door? interesting setup :)

So going for the tweeters in teh dash is not worth it? I'm going to be taking most of apart anyway (since i have to replace my ignition and put in indiglo gauges)

We'll see, do you know of which mouting depth i could go up to?

also, would there be any space to put in 5.25 in teh front?
CORRECTION, the rears are 5.25in. sorry about that.

i've heard that tweeters in the dash require you to remove the entire dashboard, not just the panels. installing indiglos and replacing your ignition just requires you to remove the panels i think. but search the archives, i remember seeing a couple of people have successfully installed aftermarket tweeters in the factory location.

whichever speakers up to 6.5in you choose, i don't think you will have to worry about depth for the fronts. the rears may need cutting if the depth isn't large enough. sorry i don't know the exact depth available.

5.25in for the fronts will require cutting/modifying of the speaker holder. depth shouldn't be a problem.
I'm slightly confisued... so the front's are 4" or 5.25" and the rears are 6.5" or 5.25"

ok, here is the setup I'm going to go with for now...

Pioneer DEH-8000r HU
4" RF component set up front
5.25" pioneer component set in the rear
2 10" audiobahn subs in a sealed box
1 5 channel 600 watt RF amp.

What do you guys think.. any recommendations before I go throught with the whole setup?

Alex
I just installed 6 1/2" coaxials in the rear, fit fine. It is an easy install done properly (I learned the hard way) all you have to do is pop off the rear speaker grill, unscrew the speaker and replace! I'm waiting to install the door speakers with 5 1/4" components to figure where to put the tweeters (stock position, kick panels, or door).

Hope this helps, have fun

i installed indiglo gauges and looked around for the tweeter, couldn't even see them. you're gonna have to take apart the entire dash, it's gonna be a b*tch.

I have Boston 2-ways in the rear, 6.5". they're don't fit perfectly, a bit small.
What 6.5 fit in the back and what 5 1/4 will fit in the front??
Do you have to take the door off to remove the front speakers?
Thanks
Good question....

I need to know this to. From what I can see it looks like you have to.:(
i put 6.5s in the back of my dad's car...fits perfect.

yes, you need to take off the door panel to get to the front speaker.

most of this stuff has been answered before. if you have a question, do a search in the car stereo forum first. and if you still have questions, post em. just remember to search first.
