My car is a 91 na. Yesterday i swapped in an r154, since my w58 gave out. Now my speedometer doesnt work. Its off by 10 mph and then it gets off by 15mph. Every other gauge works fine. Anybody else had this happen before to them?? Thanks

The Speedometer is mechanically controlled, It's just a cable that rotates from the transmission straight to your cluster. The Speedo cable is in three pieces:
A long cable from the cluster to the tranny tunnel, a short cable from the tranny tunnel to the actual transmission, and a small cylindrical gear inside the transmission. If any of the three parts is starting to wear, there will be play in the cable, any play will produce an inaccurate reading. Check each part. Spin one end, and make sure the other end spins just as well, with no play. Which ever part of the cable gives play is the part you need to replace.

Might be the spring clip in the trans that holds the speedo drive gear. If that clips breaks it makes a terrible noise. Ask me how I know. You have to pull the extension housing to put a new clip in.... but first replace the speedo cable that was binding, or lube it... because that's what makes that clip break.

the n/a cars had higher gear ratios and the turbo cars had lower gear ratios. i got the same issue but its only about 5-6 mph fast
Well mines off by 10mph, and after 50 its off by 15 , and after that im not sure. i checked the cable and it looks fine. Spins good, no noise. Its makin me mad, i dont wanna get pulled over for going over da limit.

Shadow; yours is off by a percent, not a single amount. You need to swap your rear end for one from a turbo model of the same year you got your R154 from.
Nocheez, you think that would solve my problem? I have the rear end from my other car i got the tranny from. I might get into doing that this weekend, since im off.

For some reason I didn't even think about the whole W58 to R154 deal. I must have overlooked that note. Sorry. Like some others mentioned, the gear ratios are different. They're made to match the rear end, and when the gears in the tranny are not proportional to the gears in the differential and the gear on the speedo, then it'll read incorrectly. It doesn't seem to bother many people though. I know plenty of people who have swapped R154s in with the 4.30 rear end. Either way, if you have the rear end, you might as well swap it out.
