This problem only happens sometimes, which is the annoying part about it.

Sometimes when I start my car, the idle will drop to about 500 RPM right away and then slowly bog down and die. However, if I give it gas for a few seconds the idle will return to normal and run fine.

I've seen this question asked a few different times, but either I suck at searching or I haven't been able to find a definite solution.

So far I'm led to believe it could be the fuel filter or the afm? What are the best ways to diagnose and fix this problem?

Edit: If it helps, its a bone stock 7MGE

Have you checked you Idle air control valve, sounds Exactly like what my car does.
Start your car and hold the idle at about 2000 rpm and spray chemtool into the intake manifold.
I cant see it being your maf or fuel filter because it would be consistently doing that, And what would oil in the plug balley have to do with this?
