Recently I have been noticing a strange vibration coming from the car. I can actually feel the vibration right after I start up the car. After a little while, I can only feel it with my hand on the shifter.

This vibration seems to be coming from the engine itself. It feels like something is off balance. It does it when I rev the engine, but you feel it the most between 1000-4000rpm. It does corrosponds to the RPMs. It dosent matter it the clutch is engaged or if the tranny is in neutral. So I dont think it has anything to do with the clutch or tranny. It seems to go away after a little while, but comes back after I turn the car off.

I know it's not the harmonic balancer, as I just changed that about a month ago. The car runs and idles fine. No misfires or anything of that nature.

Next step would be to perform a leakdown and compression test.

Take off the drive belt and see if that helps-Do mkiv's run a fan clutch or electric fans? If it is belt driven-look at all the blades on the fan. You may have replaced the crank pulley-but check the bolt on it-make sure it is tight. Watch all the belt driven pulleys while the car is running-the most commen failure point on any of these would be the AC compressor clutch. I would also check the motor mounts and tranny mount. You can look at them to see if the rubber is cracked.You can also "break stand" the car to see if the engine lifts excessively to one side-

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check them out. It dosent make sense that it goes away. This evening I drove the car and it didnt do it at all. ...strange

It's your dual-mass flywheel going out. Mine did that b4 it went bad, the springs were all stretched out and caused the flywheel to come out of balance. My car acted exactly the same way.

I've seen a case where the piston rings have worn, causing uneven compression between the cylinders... resulting in a vibration...
