Supra’s handling on the track?

Is the Supra just a drag car? This is a discussion I had with a person today. The words it handles like shit came by my ears a few times. After he said that I realized that a lot of post here are about ¼ mile times.

I have been looking at getting a Supra for the last year. I do not plan to run the ¼ mile with it. I want to run it on a track.

Let me hear it guys. Is the handling less desirable for laps.

Honestly if you want a track car, get an fd. The supra is great on the track and with some suspension mods can be amazing. But an fd rx7 was made for the track. It has almost 50/50 weight ratio and actuall has two track versions of the car(r1,r2) and it only weighs 2800lbs. Its common knowledge that the rx7 is a better track car(at least stock). But lots of supras do own at the track.
Oh and the rx7 cost almost half as much.

Just like ScrewDrvr said, whoever was telling that was mixed up. It is designed as a track car, not a 1/4 mile car. Dedicated 1/4 mile cars have a live axle, the Supra has an independent rear suspension.

I autoX and road race my Supra and it handles great. I put Tein HA coilovers on it and it is even more amazing now. Combine the handling with it's amazing, world-class brakes and you have a remarkable track car. Get one and you won't be disappointed.

Tell him...

.98 G's on the skidpad in stock trim and 70-0 braking that has gone undefeated until the new $600k Porsche Carrera GT came out is a claim that very few other cars can make.

M3's RX7's 300zx's etc are all at like .88 G's
rx7 fd skid pad is .99. Two magazines said that. top gear and car and driver.

a few more that were right at 99

Motor Trend April 1992 R1 Tested
0-60 mph 1/4 mi Skidpad
5.2 sec 13.8 sec .98g

Road & Track April 1992 Touring Tested
0-60 mph 1/4 mi Skidpad
5.5 sec 14.0 sec .94g

Motor Trend July 1993 R1 Tested
0-60 mph 1/4 mi Skidpad
5.3 sec 13.9 sec .97g

I'm just curious about this piece of info...
Who tested this? What were the parameters of the test (production models, cars sold in the USA, etc...)? I haven't looked up the stats for myself but I find this hard to believe, simply because I know theres better cars out there (Especially at $100K and up). Note, I'm not callin you a liar or anything, I'd just like to see some stats or somethin where I can read up alittle. Thanks!

One of the Supra road tests achieved a phenomenal 70-0 braking distance (something like 157 or 159 feet) and it's true that it stood for years. There are several cars that can beat it now, but they are truly in an elite group. :)

Steve is absoluteley right. The supras record has stood for the better part of a decade. I believe it was tested by Car and Driver in a bone stock 93.5. It was 157 feet to my knowledge. Also, to my knowledge, the first car to break the record was the Carrear GT.(which only broke it by a little over 1-2 feet!) If you search, there is a long thread about it. It is defiantly right. No 100k+ needed for that shit. Toyota all the way man!

easier to say for me cause i live in aus but if u want a dedicated track car go for a GTR over the FD ... but the FD is still excellent.. ..

as for a supra the supra is more an all rounder.. a car that is totally livable as a daily driver with ability and performance on the road and the track.. i think my car handles extremely well and is more than enuf for me on the road......

The main problem with the MKIV as a track car is the weight. Though you can make up for it with great driving and the right setup, the weight just causes you to go through parts a lot faster: brakes, tires, gas. And that really starts to add up after a few weekends.
