What is the best way to open the tailights?

You access the tail lights from inside the hatch. The Factory Service Manual , should help you.

I think he wants to take the taillight assembly apart.

I looked at it, but never tried because I was scared I was going to break the lens. But you could try baking them in the oven to melt the glue. and then carefully pry the lens off.

I have a bunch of dirt in my driver-side taillight, I just ended up buying a 'new' taillight from eBay. I suggest you do the same if you have the same problem as me.

Yeah im trying to take it apart. I tried a heat gun to melt the glue it didnt work so great and I didnt want to break the lens.

seems like oven baked would be the best thing to do. I know some people that does this many time on tail lights and headlights and have no problems......

yep Ive heard baked in the oven. I just wanted to know if someone had done it on a MK3 and how well it worked. With a little searching I found the recipe. Tekdeus made a write up about this. Thanks
