ticking from under valve cover

Hello all
I am hearing a ticking sound from within my valve cover. I dont hear it when it idles, it can be heard if I rev the engine when i am stopped and when i get under even the slightest load on the road. It increases with rpm. I keep visualizing the valves tapping something in there. Do I need to take the valve cover off and check it out?
Thanks,
Namahs

If you can hear you valves tapping that is bad. Usually you can hear the injectors going but not the valves.
valves or injectors

Hello,
It all started with this tank of gas. How do I tell the difference between the valves tapping and the injector problem. Can I check it out by just taking off the valves tapping.
thanks,
dan

Two things could be wrong in my opinion. One, it could be a bad valve, rings, or piston...oh oh Or it could be a bad fly wheel. Sometimes the sound can seem like it's coming from the valve cover area. You better have a compression or leak-down test. This can be done without taking off the head. It should tell you if you have a bad valve(s),or anything else. If you want to see if it's your fly wheel, put it in 4th gear while parked and slip the clutch slowly while engaging it in gear with the parking brake and/or brake on. If the sound(ticking) goes away then it could be a bad flywheel. The problem is, if the sound goes away it is still no guarantee that it's the flywheel so have a compression test no matter what. Sorry but I think it's going to cost you.

I just talked to a supra mechanic. He said it was a rod bearing going bad.
How many miles do you have? What type of oil are you running?
You mentioned that it started with the last tank of gas you put in. I would not be so quick to believe what people tell you the problem is. The truth is it could be a lot of different things. I would try draining the oil and using a good synthetic like mobile one. I would also drain out that tank of gas if you have not already run it through your car and put in some fresh clean gas that you know is trust worthy. In addition, you could run some injector cleaner through you car. I would run two bottles.

Try these things first before you get into really costly repairs.

Hope this helps.

Hey dude,

Does it make it when you rev or when you let off. Also does it have the infamous machine gun sound when your cruzing then let off. Also have you been running race gas then all of a suddened stopped. My car makes a funny sounds when I switch back to 93 octane sometimes. Did you talk to Rohann about it .Buzz me up!

Love that exhaust sound!
Hello,
Whats up will. I did talk to rohan and he told me that it sounded like a rod bearing going bad. The machine gun sound is a good description of what I am hearing. It makes it when the engine is under load and can be heard if I rev it just right when sitting still. The sound gets faster as the rpm's go up. I went through the entire tank of gas and put some 112 octane in it. The ticking or knocking didnt go away. Ill try some injector cleaner and some 100 octane tommorow.
Will, Ill give you a call you tommorow.

....I guess a stroker kit and an engine build wouldnt be so bad.

Hello again,
Pete, thanks for your help. I changed the oil yesterday and used the same 20w50 full synthetic I have been using. I even used the huge landcruiser filter made by fram. undortunatelly this didnt help. Ill try the injector cleaner tommorow.
thanks,
dan
How many miles? What kind of oil changes? Do you do a lot of road racing (ie oil starvation from high-G cornering)?

Also, how do you have a T66 on the GReddy header (sounds like a good combo given the price of the greddy kit)? And HKS 270 cams???

I just saw you used 20w-50 oil. I'm certainly no engine expert, but I do know heavier oils like that tend to break down at high temps. Given that no one has problems with the stock 10w-30, I'd investigate that as a possible cause.
I change the oil and filter every 2500 miles with a full synthetic oil. I think its valvoline. I possibly could have had some oil starvation due to a low oil situation. The oil light did come on but this was after the problem arose. I added a quart and the light went away. the car has 100000 miles on it but the tranny is a 98 and the engine was completely rebuilt in 98.

The cams are 272, sorry for the typo. Toyomoto put together the car and the parts are mismatched. I ask everyone who is knowledgeable to help me identify the parts, I update the list depending on the majority rule for the unknown items.

If your problem is sticky/dirty valves I would pick up a bottle of "Rislone". It is some old school shit that comes in a Yellow bottle. I've seen it work wonders on valve/lifter ticking on other cars.

It might be worth a try.
Does that go into the oil or the fuel??
