It helps keep the timing belt in place by reducing the chance of the belt skipping teeth at high RPMs.

so it´s not for preventing the belt running forward or back?

It´s for the belt not moving from the gear then and jumping teeth.......

I've seen a lot of incompetent shops leave it off and haven't seen any problems but I'd always make sure it is on every engine I touch

I´ll get it and put it on for sure....I always try to make all 100% right......
