I was putting the timing belt on my 1.5JZ this weekend and noticed the cam gear markings didn’t quite align with vertical. The marking on the harmonic damper was TDC aligned with 0 on the plastic cover. The timing belt fit with the intake cam gear at vertical marking, but the exhaust was off about half a tooth from vertical in order to fit. I’m using a 2JZ timing belt. Both the block and head have been decked with stock 2JZ head gasket. Is this normal?

Hi,
Do you have some photos? Do you have a cheap bore scope? I used a chinese one to verify that the marking on the timing gear was on the dot on the oil pump. AS for the cams it is not uncommon for it to look ever so slightly off.
