Ok listen, This isnt going to turn out to be a 7m vs. 1J thread. I am a 7M guy and my white car will always be a 7m. My Red NA needs a powerplant transplant and I am trying to determine which route to go. For those of you that know me..... your input is appreciated and should be easy. For those of you that dont, dont blab on about worthless shit. I know it, I have lived it..... I just want honest opinions. :1poke: Personally I like the 1J idea as I will be one of the few with a built 7m and a build 1J. The red car is really clean and I dont want to fuck it up either. But the 7M-GE has to go.

Honest opinions please. Thank you ahead of time.

You do know that the 1jz came in the Mk3 from the factory, right? It's not exactly a small-block Chevy. It's just as appropriate to have a 1jz as it is to have a 7M in a Mk3, I don't care what kind of purist you are. It doesn't take three miles of fake braided hose overlay to make it an attractive engine, either. The 7M is what it is and has a host of dedicated followers. The 1jz is a fabulous motor and Trey is definitely on the right track for wanting to have a little of each flavor.

The 1jz is fabulous. Tons easier to work on, way fewer hoses to get brittle or leak, no crappy throttle linkage, intake manifold faces the right way, hilarious powerband on stock twins, etc. etc.

Find a local Supra guy who will let you spend a little time with his 1jz car, see if you like it.

Tell me this isn't cleaner than 99.9% of the 7M's in the world:

HAHA. Raj the GE has a BHG. Totally drivable but I need to do something. I will keep it clean. I am still just going to replace the seats and leave the rest. Talking with the bevy of 1J guys here in the NW it seems like a good decision to mix it up a bit. It will stay stock.... nothing crazy. Its too clean of a car to mess with. I am a strong beleiver of no 2J in the MKIII. (Sorry Nick... you know I love your car, its just not me). Since the 1J is a MKIII motor that is why I am considering it. Thanks for the input guys! Keep it coming.

Idk... I don't think you'll like it. I did it and didn't like it. The only positive points were packaging, fuel economy and foolproof reliability. Ask me abouT anythig else and I'll describe, in long-winded nature, how it sucked.

If you had a 90+, I'd say do it in a heart beat. I mean, a 1j into a 90+ ma70 is about as pnp as it gets. As far as a pre90, it's far more of a hassle. But to have a peppy commuter thatsdecent on fuel and as reliable as a Toyota can get (pre-congessional hearing).

What sucks, explain? I'm curious, no flaming.

I know the lacking of torque but with stock twins its hidden really well, single on the other hand its very apparent. IMO BPU, 7m vs 1j, the 1j wins every time (maybe not in speed, but in fun to drive factor).

If you have a built 7m, why not try something different? If you had the extra $$, 2j without a doubt though.

Careful Trey, thats the way I went... I don't have a 7m anymore. If the red car was already a turbo 7m I'd stick with that, but it's not so 1jz that bitch. You won't regret it even if you don't buy mine ;)

Duane (upgradedsupra)
Ernest (ultra7m)

The engine is easy,

the ENTIRE engine bay..... seen only a FEW cars (regardless of engine) with presentable show quality engine bays and those two are in that category.

Beyond bpu, the 1jz is unfulfilling. The lack of stroke ruins it... If you've ever been in a bpu (or singled) 7m. They are slightly responsive with stock twins bit going small single on them ruins it. More lag than torque, more revs than usefulness, weak on the launch. I mean, it all really boils down to the torque. My ex's car was just disappointing after it went single. It Was fun as stock twins, 550s, Mkiv map, safc, 2j cams, 3" exhaust, intake. It was knocking on 300hp, stock boost, and I did have fun in it. But it could also boil down to the novelty. I think we were one of the first handful of people running a 1j mk3, back in 2005. Now that the novelty is lost, the only gains I see are foolproof reliability and fuel economy.

I think they are all fine. 1JZ, 7M, 2JZ are all great choices.

Personally I actually think the 1JZ is the best looking of the 3. The one that's painted green is a great example. I love the look. The 2JZ's cover is just too round.

I think the biggest advantage the 2JZ has is the large aftermarket support. Better keep that in mind as the car gets older and older, and more vendors disappear.

Just put a 1jz in it, throw a 3'' on it, and call it a day. If you're not wanting to do anything else to the engine it'll last a lifetime like that. You'll love it.

For the record, I saw all the trouble my friends had w/ 7m (they are VERY good w/ them) and I decided to skip 7m all together and went straight to 1jz.

I never understood why 'purists' or whoever care what engine is in the car. If they don't like it, too damn bad. Their opinions mean nothing to me because its MY car and I'M doing what I WANT.

Obviously, not THAT good. LMAO Ignorant comments like this is what makes these threads turn to shit.

The 1J is a smooth engine and I can make an honest comment because I have owned both a RHD 1J and have my current 7M.

If going a JZ, skip the 1J, it's a waste of time with the work you need to do, seriously. In the end, it is your car Trey, do what you want bud, you are always a good guy in my book.

Hey Fig!!! :)

theres about two things you have to do to do a 1jz swap in a mkiii. i would not consider that alot of work for what your getting. a 2jz would be great to have but the non reversible things that you have to do just ruins the car if it is a "collectors car" like Trey is trying to do. i say 1j and if it doesnt work out hey you can put the 7m back. Cant do that with a 2j

trey

if doing all the work, go 2j. Otherwise, the 7m.

Thanks Duane. At least someone said it.

Fuck a gas v8. Be a man and drop in An lbz like I've been dreaming about. Ppe diesel builds stand alone engine harnesses for them to drop them in just about anything. But that's not even why we are here.

Trey is entitled to ask for input about his choice and he's right to do so. As time passes, the ield of experience grows. Novelties become jaded and people think more rationally rather than emotionally. I've been on the 1j bandwagon and after I got over myself, the 1j fad passed for me. Ask me this question in 2005 and ask me in 2010, illgive you twodifferent answers. So searching for a 2, 3 or 5 yr old thread for answers is going to give dated info and opinions.
