I've done the search, and havent found exactly what i want. I'm a newbie so y'all be nice. But i'm considering an 89 automatic with the turbo, and 45K on the engine. So, I'm wondering if it is worth it to get for the overall speed in 1/4. I wanted to get a 5spd 'cause i already have an auto in my celica and wanted to have a manual. but my delimea is in, will the turboed automatic take the turboed standard. + if i can find a perf. torque converter will that just kill the 5spd?

& where is a torque converter, lol, i've been searching. But i can buy the 89 Supra Turbo, targa top, body good cond., interior alright, and 45K miles for $3,400. thanks for your help.

PS the celica is going for show, then i'll start working on the supra for performnce.

Torque convertors are an auto only deal.

If what you're going for is fastest quarter mile, an auto with a built tranny and upgraded torque convertor will be the fastest way to go.

The manual is arguably more fun to drive, unless you get a "tiptronic" style manual shift kit for your auto.
actually the manual mk3s are faster then the auto mk3s

the "stock" boost on the manual mk3 is 6.8 and the auto is 4.something

i quote stock becasue obviously most of thep ower loss is through the drivetrain but you get the picture....

get the manual youll be happier...trust me! even if it is a drag car....
domestic auto tranny owns :)

thats true to a point.. but when you start getting into sub 10 sec passes... a high stall auto will own a stick...

What ? who told you that? utter tosh...
Actually you have it backwards.....I have seen magazine articles with turbo mk3 autos turning the 1/4 mile in 14.8, these were legit car tests, don't remember where i saw it, and no the stock boost on a auto is 6.8 as well, when my car was stock it would hit just about the 7 area. The auto is not a bad way to go, but a 5-speed is surely more fun to drive.

yeah the stock boost is 6.8 also....BUT you wont get that because of the auto...trust me....search around youll see what im talkin bout....
:agreed:
I am agreeing with the fact the auto supra's dont boost as high as manual ones, becasue they arnt put under as much load.

what are you agreeing with? lol...... post whore ;)
An auto is a lot easier on the rest of your drivetrain. Even in race trim.
Too much Bullsh**

1.)There is only one thing that controls the boost on a stock car!! The waste gate actuator! If you shim the waste gate or get an actuator off a stick then the boost is the same.

2.)Most local shops can rework your converter. I had mine done locally for $150. Stock stall was around 2200. After they cut it apart and rebraze(sp) the fins inside, my stall is about 3000.

3.)As far as not seeing as much load... The gear ratio's are taller for a auto( 4 gears instead of 5), so MORE load is placed on the engine.

4.)I can power brake at the line and build 8 to 10 lbs. of boost. When i leave the line I have alot more horsepower and torque then a stick at the start. And it does'nt bog down either.

5.)By patching in a little switch you can lock up your converter any time you want, getting rid of any slippage in the converter, which puts more load on the engine.

If you get a modified converter you have to get an additional cooler or your tranny will be fried in a few weeks. The modified converter will create a lot more heat then a stock one.

My car drives just like a stock car...until you stomp on the gas.:p

Appreciate the input, I'm still looking around so we'll see, and if i end up w/ the auto 1st thing I'll do is put a converter in it w/ any other necessary changes. 'Preciate the help
